Lightbulb Install Windows 98 after Windows XP

Install Windows98 after Windows XP.

Installing Windows 98 after Windows XP is patchy job but this tutorial will help you how to do so. This procedure assumes that Windows XP is installed on drive C: and all the other hard drive partitions must be FAT 32 enabled because Windows 98/ME cannot be write on NTFS partition.

1) The first thing to do is Install Windows 98. For this follow the steps below: -
a. Boot your computer with your Windows 98 bootable CD with CD-ROM support.
b. At A: prompt, type x:/win98/setup.exe (x = CD ROM Drive)
c. When prompted for the install location, you will see C:/Windows.000. Change it to other drive, assume D: where you wish to install Win 98. Complete the installation and allow your computer to boot into Windows98.

2) After installing Windows 98, its time to repairing the Windows XP Boot Loader. Follow the steps given below: -
a. Create a Windows 98 Startup Disk from Add/Remove Program of Windows 98 in Control Panel.
b. Create a Notepad File with the following entries exactly as shown below: -
L 100 2 0 1
N C:\BOOTSECT.DOS
R BX
0
R CX
W
Q
And save the file to the Win98 Startup Disk as READ.SCR
c. Restart your computer and boot it from Windows 98 Startup Disk and at the A: Prompt, type:
DEBUG <READ.SCR and hit Enter Key.
This will create a BOOTSECT.DOS file needed to boot Windows 98.
(Use ATTRIB C:\BOOTSECT.DOS –S –H –R, if BOOTSECT.DOS already exist & you get an error message while trying to create it)
d. Allow you computer to boot from CD and insert your Win XP CD. Boot from it.
e. You will see some files being copied & then you will be presented with a choice of installing or repairing an existing installation. Press R for Repair.
f. You will be asked which XP installation you want to log into. Enter 1 because there is only one installation.
g. You will be prompted for the Administrator password. Type your Administrator Password if any; you have given at the time of your Win XP installation. If not, just press Enter Key for blank password.
h. At the C:\Windows prompt, type FIXBOOT and hit Enter. You’ll be prompted for confirm. Do so.
i. When FIXBOOT is finished, remove the XP CD and type EXIT to reboot your computer.

You will now get the XP BOOT LOADER with your choices of OS.
