Default Synaptics Adds Mac-Like Gestures to Touchpads

Synaptics, the driver provider for the majority of laptops with trackpads, is rolling out an upgrade that allows for two new types of finger movement and application control. Similar to MacBooks, the Synaptics upgrade lets touchpad users flick two fingers across their pads to scroll through items or change modes. More intriguing is the "ChiralTouch," which detects circular trackpad movement and converts it into scrolling or rotation. Synaptics says that more than 100 apps currently support the new motions, with more to come. To get in on the new scrolling, check with your laptop manufacturers' support site (or Windows Update) to see if an updated driver for your model is available.

So what are the odds that a laptop has this touchpad??

Also does it say that multi-touch is supported? I think the hardware doesnt allow that. Driver level changes cannot enable multi-touch in uni-touch hardware, isnt it?

I need to use the pinch-to-widen ; open-to-zoom feature. Sorry for not being able to frame it properly but that iPhone kind of touch utility. I need something like that.

Its the driver which is being updated. AFAIK most touchpads use Synaptics drivers.

hmm.. dell laptops dont use synaptics' drivers so i suppose i wont be able to get it. Since the functionality is provided in driver, i think it will be limted. Don't expect it to provide exactly mac or iphone kind of features.

Drivers for linux is not available from Synaptics. As you already know most of the drivers for linux is written by the comunity itself.

alright seeing that either most of u didnt read the article properly ordidnt understand it
i will clear some common doubts
yes it is driver update only so no multi touch, but even then it brings alot of cool and useful features like circular scrolling, etc

all laptops using synaptics can avail of this update

as for linux users and lovers like myself i would like to tell uthat this like many other things has been done in linux long long ago

just install an app called gsynaptics it's there in ubuntu repos i know.

and enjoy!!!!!!
