Nvidia Targets 3D Gaming With Stereoscopic 3D

At NVISION 08, Nvidia announced Stereoscopic 3D Technology, which will enable a three-dimensional gaming experience using Nvidia GeForce GPUs. This technology, exclusive to Nvidia GeForce GPUs, will have hardware and software integrated solutions for auto-conversion of games to stereoscopic 3D imagery.

The stereoscopic technology will support Microsoft DirectX on more than 350 existing games that would be compatible out of the box, without any additional patch installation. As part of the Stereoscopic 3D kit, Nvidia will bundle 3D glasses, an emitter device which will probably connect the 3D glasses to the display panel and computing system simultaneously.

Nvidia will soon launch 3D glasses meant to be used with Mitsubishi 73-inch 3D ready 1080p DLP HDTVs and ViewSonic 3D ready 120Hz LCD displays. To view a short Stereoscopic 3D demo, head to the Nvidia Force Within page and when the flash show starts click on 3D Stereo.

Nvidia's plan is fairly visible. On one side, Emergent's Gamebryo game engine, Unreal game engine and more than 150 games already have PhysX integrated support. When Nvidia's Stereoscopic 3D kit is used with Nvidia GeForce graphic card while playing the PhysX integrated games, an entirely new three-dimensional and interactive gaming experience would take place.

Therefore, Nvidia's master plan is to lure gamers to buy GeForce cards for games with PhysX integration. A step further, these gamers could be coaxed to buy the 3D Stereoscopic kit for the ultimate 3D gaming experience.
