Default Microsoft extends support life of XP

MICROSOFT HAS PROMISED to provide support services for its soon-to-be-retired Windows XP until 2014 because too many of its key business users are still running the ageing OS.

Gotta feel for Microsoft. This just goes to show that although the adoption rate of vista has increased over the past year, many people (esp enterprises) are extremely reluctant to use Vista.

quite obvious. enterprises can't afford to continuously upgrade hardware every 3 years. Their budget is more like one low cost upgrade every 15 years or so.

Thats why Enterprises need to switch to ***** based Thin Client setups.

Finally, its quite heartening to see that M$ did decide to extend support for WindowsXP.

Their extending support for XP clearly re-iterates the fact that business users aka Enterprises are not yet ready to up(down?)grade to vista.Period.

Dude, I am talking about small time enterprises, not offices of Reliance or Tata. Small as in the local retail outlet, the next door real estate agent, etc.

And when the F did I say vista sux *compared* to XP ? Even I advice people to go and get Vista instead of XP if they are buying an OS for their computer which is of today's standards. I myself will buy vista and not xp if I ever need to buy an OS for my family's use (There is always an array of 10000 distros out there for me, just waiting to be experimented with)

Them having to extend Xp's support repeatedly shows that something is wrong with Vista. You just cant deny that.
This is in fact unprecedented. When XP came out, yes it was more heavy on the system that 98 yet it didnt experience teething problems like Vista.
Vista should in fact do well, given that it was delayed by a almost a couple of years and there was a long gap between XP and Vista.
Yet, XP is not yet outdated and Vista is not the bleeding edge futuristic OS everyone hoped it would be. The advantages of Vista are simply not significant enough to make the upgrade compelling.
And that does imply, Vista is not the outstanding product MS claimed (and hoped) it would be.

Somehow I think everyone knew this was coming. Definitely Enterprises don't wait that long to roll out their new hardware and it definitely isnt going to be a low cost one. But definitely upgrades would hit a nerve if it were every other year.

By the way Thin clients are rather a concept than being OS based. You can have thin clients on pretty much any platform.

I'm quite new to the gaming arena so Im not sure about this, Is there an OS with a gaming edition out there? Also One of Vistas Strong points (As per ads) is performace of premium games on the Vista Platform I recall.

By gaming edition, I mean an OS which is basically meant to just satisfy gaming needs.
No extra stuff, no bloat. Only gaming performance. And ofcourse, since the use won't be anything ecept gaming, price must also be very less.

As for Vista's strong point on gaming, its a joke really. By premium games, they mean DirectX 10. And only vista's premium editions support this. So obviously only these OSes can run those games well.

Most guys like me, who use another OS for practically anything and everything except gaming, need windows mainly for satisfying these er... "childish" desires.

Unfortunately, the Vista Home Basic edition is just TOO basic. It lacks DirectX. While at the same time, Windows XP Home sold a lot because it had everything families needed - it could play the latest games, it could ensure that there were not too many restrictions between users, since home use didn't need that, it was sleek and fast.

No wonder my friend, who triple boots Windows XP Home, Windows Professional and Windows XP MCE, uses Home for gaming. He was talking about high Frames Per Second in Home compared to pro and mce, but I laughed at him saying Windows XP is always the same. Now I guess I need to eat my words.

There is no official gamer edition. But stripped down editions of vista termed gamers edition are available illegaly on warez and torrent sites.

Looks like I'm late for an answer, and no I cannot share my key. Now have any of you tried to create more than four partitions in Vista Starter edition?

No, Wrong. Even Windows Vista home basic has full support to run Crysis in DirectX 10 mode with full performance. DirectX 10 support is common to all Vista editions.
