Six-core Intel processors coming this year!
Intel announced Monday that it expects to ship a six-core processor to OEMs in the second half of this year. With 1.9 billion transistors and 16MB of L3 cache, the six-core chip, code-named Dunnington, will be built with Intel's new 45 nanometer (nm) technology, according to Pat Gelsinger, a senior vice president and general manager of Intel's Digital Enterprise group. "The big cache and six cores will give customers a nice bump in performance," Gelsinger said during a press briefing today to talk about the company's product roadmap and its upcoming Intel Developer's Forum slated to be held next month in Shanghai.
This announcement comes after AMD confirmed that it has started shipping its triple-core Phenom processors just last week, and again pushes Intel well-ahead of its chief rival. However, it's not necessarily a terribly damaging development for AMD. According to Dan Olds, an analyst with the Gabriel Consulting Group, "for AMD, it just means that they're falling a little bit further behind...a six-core is a big deal, but most desktop software can't really take advantage of dual-core yet..."

Re: Six-core Intel processors coming this year!
yes, I think at this rate, within 2 years octacore(8-core processor) will be launched.
I will directly jump to octacore rather than six core
lol crysis 2 will require 10 cores or what

there already octo and hexadeca(16) cores flooding the markets. This is a mindless core war. They should instead concentrate on upgradability, vfm and performance.

No it's not .
There actually are softwares that can take advantage of Quad-core and Octa-Core and software developers , multimedia creators definitely do take advantage of them .

Isn't L3 cache kinda crappy? I thought L2 was the important stuff...

Re: Six-core Intel processors coming this year!
The general purpose applications are not even dual core optimised yet & they are relesing quado core.
Core 2 Duo E8200 is my favorite. 2 cores are enough for home use & even workstation use if you know how to work properly. It supports SSE4.1, 45nm fabrication means low heat & temperature, more cache.....well, E8200 is a CPU anyone can use easily for next 4 years unless into gaming. Buy once & forget about anything else...
Although with Intel Neahlam core coming, it doesn't makes sense to upgrade to E8xxx series if u already got a dual core system

Re: Six-core Intel processors coming this year!
Hmm....save some money guys.
A typical upgrade cycle should be of 4 years for non gaming computers. I upgrade my computer with every new release of Windows. So my next upgrade will be in 2011 when Windows 7 comes, till then dual core is enough for non-gaming CPU.
90% of the consumer level software out there are not optimized for dual core. Have a look, is MS word optimized for Dual core???? (it doesn't even need dual core). So why jump for multi-core CPU thinking of the future when u know that in future there might be something else tempting to buy.
I say stick to all the cores u have right now. For anything non-gaming or non-Pro use Quad Core is useless. The next major intel revision is nehalam core so upgrade to that if u like by March 2009 & stick to that new architecture till 2012 easily.
I myself won't be upgrading my computer for next 4 years. There is no need to upgrade...

Re: Six-core Intel processors coming this year!
hmmm 6 core Cpu
Looks Intel is getting ready for Windows 7 as it be a better bloatware than Vista is
Just joking
I have observed a P4 running at 3ghz is faster than a c2d running at 2ghz. as most apps do not use 2 cores
why can't devs make applications to use the available processor power?

It's a slow process. The industry has always been about single core & more MHz, or dual CPU but dual core came just a while ago, I wonder why developers don't make such apps maybe it takes lots of re-coding. The multi core optimized compilers are already available.

Re: Six-core Intel processors coming this year!
What's the use of 6 cores, when no apps can't even utilize 2 cores to their full capacity?
Anyways, those with big pockets will go for upgrade,i will be upgrading next year.
Lets see what does 2009 brings out.

Re: Six-core Intel processors coming this year!
@gary:isnt linux got SMP and SMT support already(hence faster) that means these quad/octo core are may be utilized fine.but I dont know on the application side
well,my dream of seeing Pentium 5 is over
