Will the third and final service pack for Windows XP manage to breath new life into the operating system? Will users and original equipment manufacturers be able to apply enough pressure on Microsoft to keep Windows XP alive? There is even an online petition available to save Windows XP. Anything but to move to Windows Vista. Yes, by all means. Save Windows XP. But from what? Is XP even in need of saving? Last I checked, Windows XP still accounts for the lion's share of the operating system market. All other platforms, including Windows Vista, don't even manage to come close to it. And growing on the operating system market means actually eroding XP's audience, because there is little elbow room with this ubiquitous platform having dug its roots in deep starting back in 2001. According to Net Applications, XP is credited with 76.91%, while after almost a year since it hit the shelves, Vista has only gone as high as 10.48%. By comparison Mac OS X has a share of 7.31% and all the Linux distributions just 0.63%. Microsoft is currently developing XP SP3, having already made available for download a standalone version of the public Release Candidate in December 2006. The company points to the first half of this year for the delivery of XP SP3, and while the long overdue service pack will indeed breath new life into the platform it will not save Windows XP either. On June 30, 2008, Microsoft has set the expiration date for the retail and OEM availability of XP. Vista's predecessor will still be available via system builders until 2009. And on top of it all, Mainstream support will last until April 2009, with extended support until 2014. That's longer than the support Microsoft is offering for Windows Vista Ultimate. Just in case that you were wondering, Windows XP is not going anywhere... It will still be around for Windows 7, that's 2010, in case you're confused. The last thing it needs is to be saved. i am using windows vista after too much of troubleshooting now.. my GFx card was unable to play games on vista.. and the x64 edition was not booting up with 4 GB RAM, so Vista has got some work to do yet.. well XP it rocks anytime, but vista is present and future.. the later future i.e windows 7, its no point talking about that right now.. ?

completely agree with shantanu
Windows 7..is just a announcement for us.We dont know anything about this. And moreover, Microsoft will first fix all bugs and needs of windows vista, before launching windows 7. Microsoft worked for around 5 years on vista, how can they leave vista with bugs and compatibility issues.

But with games requiring more and more ram vista x64 and directX10 streaming technology is good for the future. Its just that it has to happen. And i assume that prices might go higher for windows as it shifts to being more of a luxurious os.

Yes.......it is true that XP itself is biggest threat to vista at present. But I dont see XP SP3 is going to kill vista. People are not using vista..only because they dont have good hardware configuration. Most branded system comes with pre-installed Vista......so, like this vista is getting momentum.

MS wants Vista to sell and their own XP turns out to be the biggest competitor. Soon, they gonna stop selling XP and consequently support also. Then, Vista will be their primary selling product which already has poor reputation. Now SP1 seems to fix some of the problems though not all. Some new problems seem to be cropping up like DirectX 10.1 conflicts (means the latest off the shelf graphic cards are already obsolete !). On the other hand XP has found its feet firmly after SP2 though it still has some security problems (which may also be present in Vista). However, one does not know what SP3 is going to patch in Vista. Is it going to patch up security holes or is it going to back port newer features of Vista or is it going to add support for DirectX 10 (may be).
Whatever, but I suspect, given MS's reputation, SP3 is going to ruin XP anyway to boost sales of Vista. |

XP is like an old shoe, warm, cozy, comfortable, which no one wants to discard... yet ! Over a period of time, (what 5 years?), its been patched patched and patched to make it what it is today! And Vista, like a new shoe is biting some
Everyone today is waiting for Windows 7. There is talk of it being released in even 2009 H2 ! Dont think its possible, nor would MS like to rush into 'it' ... again ! The official timeline is 2010. Wont be surprised if it goes upto even 2011. None of us can be sure. In case you have missed this thread, check it: Ho hum ... History repeating itself ... XP yesterday, Vista today. Time to move on !

Vista is much better than XP. I have been living with it without any issues. I wonder why ppl criticize it. It has been in out blood to resist change. This starts way back when we were resisting XP!!!
