Thumbs up RadeonHD 1.0.0 Driver Released

It was just a week ago that the RadeonHD v0.0.4 driver was released, but today it has been replaced by v1.0! RadeonHD 1.0.0 was just pushed out to the public, and while it's still lacking 3D support and isn't bug-free, it's matured quite a bit over the past two and a half months that it's been available to the public.

The driver has jumped from v0.0.4 to v1.0.0 as according to Novell's Luc Verhagen, "We still have some open bugs which will require some further investigation. But no release will ever be perfect, and our early adopters are reporting far less issues already, so we feel that our driver is good enough to be tagged as a proper release. This way, a wider public will start to use our driver, and further issues can be discovered and fixed."

The RadeonHD 1.0.0 driver officially supports the ATI RV505, RV515, RV516, R520, RV530, RV535, RV570, R580, RS690, R600, RV610, and RV620 chip families. The RV670 / Radeon HD 3800 series hasn't been officially tested, but may be supported as well. This current driver has full mode-setting support with dual-head capabilities and is RandR 1.2 compliant (A Newbie's Guide To RandR 1.2). While there is full modesetting support and hardware cursor acceleration, both 2D and 3D acceleration are not available in this release.

Now that the RadeonHD 1.0.0 driver is out the door, the Novell developers are looking forward to adding more features again (hopefully this will be accompanied by additional AMD documentation being released to the public). More information is available on the RadeonHD Wiki. The 1.0.0 driver source-code can be downloaded from FreeDesktop.org FTP. If you need help installing the RadeonHD driver on Ubuntu, check out our installation guide. For the background of this driver, check out our RadeonHD introduction and AMD's Open-Source Strategy Explained. We were just briefed on this v1.0.0 release minutes before it was made public in their git repository, but in the coming days we'll be running additional tests and sharing other information on this latest open-source driver release.
