The Eee PC will be launched in India by late November. If the pricing is ok, I would buy one.

Regarding your question, I was at an Asus special event yesterday. They had a demo Eee PC laptop. It's really very sleek with good ergonomics. The screen resolution is a bit too low for my liking and I'd prefer a black one instead of the white. The keyboard and integrated WiFi will make it sell like hot cakes.

Really looking forward to its launch!

Cheap laptops and cheap Pc is possible but its not so because dealers dont want to come it up. And its not possible until some good brands do it because cheap pc are beyond hands of low level companies.

There are 4 different models. Obviously the cheapest one is the best VFM. But it would only have 2GB flash storage. Not decent for Windows XP. So, I'm more interested in the 4GB one. Asus didn't say much except, the pricing would be very 'competitive'. Expect a 12k+taxes on the cheapest one (considering it costs ~$250 in other world markets).

what is the supposed cost of the 8 GB Model.? I would prefer running a slim Linux distro on it then Windows XP cos it lacks a webcam/mic anyway. But then again, everything we can do on this, we can also do on W960i, isn;t it

yup.. i m also interested in the 4gb/1gb ram model..
btw they also said it wd have a slot for normal ddr2 lappy ram..
if the 4g/1gb ram price is too high we can go for a 4g/512mb ram and then upgrade...
also a external hdd 160gb + casing for about 4k wd go great with this..

@gx this lappy if launched ll take the thunder out of many expensive mobiles..

Not for me, see...the model i m interested in will cost about the same as W960i, but u r forgetting the most importent thing, its running a computer OS which means 800X600 is quite low, its hard to work on such a resolution on a Laptop but its easy to work on a mobile phone of 320x240 resolution cos the UI meaning icons, menus are made according to that...

Asus Eee PC needs a custom Linux distro

^^^^ Vista Ultimate??? Dude... Heights of expectation!

IMHO they should've given a bay for putting in a laptop HDD if required.

Its just a 7 inch screen. 800x600 is more than sufficient at that size.

@gx
Surely you dont expect W960i to be in range of 15k.....do you???
Also a mobile will remain a mobile...you cant get 1GB RAM on it neither the processing power that this EEE PC will give you...
But yes I do agree that that a W960i is a mini computer that does bridge the gap between mobiles and computers a little bit more

Does it matter? The ammount of work I can do on EEE PC will b more or less same as the ammount of work I will do on W960i. To work on the net, I will need WiFi for EEE PC, but on W960i I can use WiFi & 3G both...

Well, its just me, I would prefer buying a W960i over EEE PC for the price they are asking for the 8 GB Model with 1 GB RAM

Seesh...thats what N95 8GB edition is doing

Is W960i behind N95 8GB??
Only marginally if you consider the OS on it...W960i does give you some more features like touchscreen which N95 doesn't sport..
And as far as work is concerned...How easy is it to edit documents on a 3" mobile screen???
There are so many tasks that you cannot accomplish on a mobile..
This EEE PC is a low cost laptop and is way more functional than any mobile phone...I hope you will agree with this
And your mobile phones today cannot replace a PC...be the PC be a EEE PC or a normal PC....

Dude, we are on same side. SE Fanboy here

Tough, but with a 800X600 pixel resolution based screen, its not that easy on EEE PC too...but still I agree, much better then a W960i's screen. Then again, I don't need to edit docs that much....a combination of proper laptop W960i is best.

EEE PC will do for those who need it, but yeah....they do need a custom Linux or Windows distro & UI.

Well I aint a Nokia nor a SE fanboy...I am a fan a particular model...be it W960i or be it N95 or my beloved N73 ME

EEE PC is for students who need a low cost PC along with mobility...
I am sure it will be a big hit if it releases with the price tag that Sourabh has mentioned and also if its tough and doesnt have any problems...

IMO 800X600 is pretty decent for a 7" screen...we still have many computers that have 800X600 resolution on 15" monitors...

It already has an excellent Linux distro. Very neat and simple interface. Organized in to a tab like window for Internet, Work, Play, etc.. Below each tab, related programs are featured. All the messengers, office suite, games, etc.

Moreover, they also revealed that there would be mini website on asus servers from where you can download programs custom made for Eee PC. It's said that the minor delays were due to these Linux proggies.

After you see it, you won't compare it to a phone. It's sub-notebook you can carry with you in the backpack. Just not super-expensive.

^^^ then good na...but still, if it was me, I would have preferred a tablet PC of 7 Inch then a Laptop, after all, I love writing on a paper.

But for the price, EEE PC is commandable.

I think this is a list of things you need to supplement your EEE PC with:

1. IDE to USB cable
2. a portable external HDD
3. an extra USB mouse
4. a good internet connection
5. upgrade to 1 gig ddr2 ram
6. vlc media player
7. lincity - ng
6. some good emulators for gba, atari, etc

and if the budget falls within 25k for the 8 gig model, count me in
