Govt grants Rs 3.5 cr to CBI to fight cyber crime

NEW DELHI: Concerned over increasing cyber crimes, the government on Friday announced a grant of Rs 3.5 crore to CBI for enabling the premier investigating agency acquire latest tools to tackle this menace.

"The cyber crimes are grossly under-reported because of business interest, besides lack of trust in ability in the law enforcement agencies to successfully investigate such offences," IT and Communications Minister A Raja said in his address at a conference organised by the CBI and Interpol to find ways in countering cyber crime.

Announcing a grant of Rs 3.5 crore from his ministry, Raja said this amount would help the investigating agency in procuring the latest software tools and cyber crime probe and training.

Emphasising on the need for urgent attention on cyber crime, the minister said the increasing number of mobile phone users coupled with advancement in wireless technology could make everyone a potential target of cyber crime.

Besides the monetary grant, Raja also extended support of his ministry in training CBI officials to deal with issues involving cyber crime.

On the part of the government, Raja said the government was also working on introducing amendments to the IT Act, 2000 which would deal with a number of issues including data protection, data theft, e-commerce fraud, child pornography, identity documents theft and privacy.
