Thumbs up AMD Launches New ATI Linux Driver

AMD Delivers Significant Graphics Performance and Compatibility Enhancements for Consumer Linux Users

ATI Radeon™ HD 2000 Series, Accelerated Indirect GLX Support and Increased Gaming Performance Highlight Most Significant Series of CAtalyst™ Software Enhancements Ever for Linux Users

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--AMD (NYSE: AMD) today announced plans to extend its leadership position in graphics software with major enhancements to performance and compatibility for ATI Radeon™ graphics for consumer Linux users. These improvements are planned for subsequent releases of ATI’s Catalyst™ software package beginning in early September. This announcement represents a significant first step in redefining the graphics landscape for Linux consumer users. Moving forward, AMD also plans to accelerate efforts to address the needs of the open source community as well.

“As client computing on Linux continues to grow so has our support and focus on delivering best-in-class performance and compatibility for our products,” said Ben Bar-Haim, vice president of software, Graphics Product Group at AMD. “In the second half of 2007 we plan to deliver the most significant enhancements for ATI Radeon graphics ever for Linux and reaffirm our commitment to consumer users and the community as a whole.”
With the forthcoming Catalyst 7.9 software release in September, AMD will add Linux support for the ATI Radeon™ HD 2000 series of graphics processors. The Radeon HD 2000 series offer a number of compelling new features for Linux users including AMD’s patented unified shader architecture.
In addition to expanded GPU support, Catalyst™ 7.9 is being designed to offer a number of major performance improvements across the board with users seeing up to 90 per cent improvement in such popular titles as Doom 3 and Quake 4 (http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=823&num=3). In Q4 2007, AMD’s Catalyst software package for Linux will add support for Accelerated Indirect GLX (AIGLX). AIGLX is an enabling technology that allows Linux users to enjoy a rich visual 3D user interface that provides a more immersive end-user compute experience.

nice!but now the notorious VIA Unichrome sucks in Linux.some even asked the company to volunteer oss drivers.but VIA is silent.openchrome is the only way in practical for VIA Unichrome IGP support.
earlier Ati & VIA are the two blacksheeps.now VIA alone!

^^ yeah.. hardly any or no via chipsets/graphics nowadays.. and btw, via has changed lanes to UPMC/mobile chips and has recently developed that small and highly power efficient chip.. so I don't think they are going to care about drivers for their legacy products anymore...

infact unichrome&openchrome oss projects are the only safe way to get atleast 2D drivers working in via stable.via's original driver from 2005 sucks and which needs root access for enabling the display drivers.
just have a look at http://forums.viaarena.com/ linux section for the cry!

and not to forget the instable drivers!even openchrome too! .

well all i can say is that it boosted nvidia's sale and thats why amd/ati felt the heat and released the new linux driver. oss can't be ignored in today's world! this proves it! however, as HiH said via doesn't care for its legacy products anymore as the intel, amd 690, nvidia 6150 etc. literally killed via's IGP chipsets.

Update from slashdot:
AMD To Open ATI Specs

Several readers tipped us the followup of yesterday's AMD/ATI news, the new development hinted at by Phoronix: AMD has announced they are releasing the specs for all new Radeon chipsets, and will be working with the open source community to develop a fully functional 2D and 3D graphics driver. An anonymous reader opines: "AMD appears to be following in Intel's footsteps with upcoming releases. If AMD is successful NVidia will have real competition in the GNU/Linux gaming arena. While past support by ATI was unsatisfactory the new AMD buyout appears to be having some effect."

It makes sense. AMD cannot spend money & resource in developement of drivers for OSS cos they are already in debt of about $3 billion after ATI buyout. Its better to let OSS developers make it for free for the OpenGL part which later AMD can again freely use in Windows saving money in developement cost.
