Default kestrel features revealed!!

Finally we get details about Opera's biggest update to their browser since 9.0, code named kestrel .

Quote:
I did three tests for each browser and averaged out the time it took for each to completely load our site. Here are the results with the slowest browsers first:
Internet Explorer 7: 18 seconds
Firefox 2: 15 seconds
Opera 9.23: 12 seconds
Firefox 3 Nightly: 11 seconds
Opera 9.5 Alpha: 8 seconds
As expected, freakishly fast!!

More features revealed -
http://cybernetnews.com/2007/09/03/c...eatures-video/

I am guessing/hoping that when there is an official release along ith the changelog. Still more features should popup.

Withing 18 hours we should get an alpha release to play with . Grab it from the Desktop team blob
note that this is a pre-beta release, WILL contain bugs, could blow up your PC . Try at your own risk ( that is if you can resist not trying )

I did some quick checks. Tested by opening three forum pages , microsoft homepage and youtube homepage.

1 tab - (forum) - 14,340 K
2 tabs - (2 forum pages) 14,400 K
3 tabs - (3 forum pages) 14,628 K
4 tabs - (3 forum pages + MS homepage )- 20,200 K
5 tabs - (3 forum tabs + MS + youtube Homepage) - 32,600 K

The history search feature is really cool .. it reminds me of google desktop search

I just realised that minimising and maximising the window reduces a lot of memory comsumption by opera. just try it once.

Default Go and get Opera 9.5 alpha!

Source

Quote:
Fasten your seatbelts, and get ready to test drive Kestrel yourself. After more than a year of development, we invite you to test Opera 9.5 alpha and tell us what you think about it.
In short, Opera 9.5 alpha is:
  • Performance
  • Full history search
  • Improved site compatibility
  • Access for everyone
  • Improved platform integration
  • Preview of bookmark and Speed Dial synchronization
  • Magic Windows build number
And much more! Take a look at the huge changelogs to see what is new:
Windows
Mac
UNIX

Don't forget to report bugs, but check the Known Issues list in the changelogs and discuss them in the forums or newsgroups first.

And now: go and get it! Make sure you backup your opera profile directory when you upgrade from an earlier version of Opera, and stay tuned for more updates and builds on the Desktop Team blog.

Download:
Opera 9.5 alpha for Windows
Opera 9.5 alpha for Mac
Opera 9.5 alpha for Unix
As usual, the best support for standards and the fastest out there!!

Great news. Waiting to go back home and install it.

BTW, in Opera 9.2 I usually opened around 5 windows with 200 tabs each and no performance drop. Specs of my comp below.

The right click ->Block content thing is not working on Mac. On Windows I don't need it cos ad muncher does it all.

I like the speed on Mac, but the features are not there yet, even skins don't work. Going back to firefox, will give final version another try.

Also on Windows, I m happy with Firefox & IE just due to my orbit downloader & AI Roboform reqirment.

Cos I cannot edit the wand password (I don't know how to). Wand option in preference only shows the username & not password

2nd, I prefer AI Roboform, Its unified & works with both IE & FF. I gave a feedback to developers for making it support Opera on Windows.

On Mac its a different story. i can use wand cos I m using Keychain with 1Passwd which is like AI Roboform in Mac.

Right now typing this from Windows. CPU Usage is quite high....it indeed is an alpha version.
