Default Paramount/DreamWorks to Support HD DVD Exclusively

AP: Paramount/DreamWorks Drops Blu-ray; Studio to Support HD DVD Exclusively

According to a just-issued AP report, Paramount Pictures has announced it will exclusively support HD DVD, dropping its support of the Blu-ray format.
It's a move few predicted, and it's a particular surprise given the Blu-ray format's 2-to-1 lead over HD DVD in disc sales over the first half of 2007.

According to the AP article, beginning with 'Shrek the Third,' Paramount and all of its subsidiaries (including DreamWorks Pictures, Paramount Vantage, Nickelodeon Movies and MTV Films) will release its next-gen releases on HD DVD only.

"Part of our vision is to aggressively extend our movies beyond the theater, and deliver the quality and features that appeal to our audience," said Brad Grey, chairman and chief executive of Paramount Pictures. "I believe HD DVD is not only the affordable high quality choice for consumers, but also the smart choice for Paramount."

That may not be entirely true. While there were more standalone HD DVD players than Blu ray players in the States, the total number of blu ray players, including the PS3, far exceeded HD DVD. And recent sales records proved just that (for dual format movies).

I guess the tables will sort of turn now that Paramount is going HD DVD...

Seems HD-DVD got some good backing now. But is it a wise move time will only tell.

yeah i still haven't seen any rated 'r' high-def discs

i personally feel hd-dvd will go on for atleast 7yrs after which either cheaper blu-ray or a new format will rule.if blu-ray gets cheaper soon we will see hd-dvd discs become like dvd's of today.

to go more into the future optical era is soon to be doomed like floppies and will be replaced by flash storage
