Exclamation No Linux for Berlin?

While there may be a great deal of popular and government interest in Linux in Germany, the city government of Berlin is rejecting demands [German link] to migrate its computers to Linux, according to a report published by Heise.

The Berlin government insists that it's happy with its current combination of open-source and proprietary software. "We're still stuck in the IT Middle Ages," said Thomas Birk, a leader of the pro-open-source Green Party in the Berlin parliament, Heise reported.

Part of the problem with upgrading to Linux seems to be concerns for the costs of updating PCs, which will still be compatible with Windows NT systems. While the migration itself would cost between 50 and 100 million Euros, Birk is certain that the long term savings from freeing the government's computers from Microsoft licensing fees will more than pay for the cost of the upgrade, the report said.

The matter is still not settled completely, and Berlin's city offices may yet be running Linux and open document format compatible software before all is said and done, according to the article at Heise.

Default Re: No Linux for Berlin?

Iam starting to hate germany for their ignorance and being such a coward. It is not just for open source. When ever they create a game of software most of it are german when asked to translate english they never listen. Most of the german people are highly unhelpful people.
