Next PlayStation Version Could Arrive Sooner Than Expected

With PlayStation 3’s time on the market closing in on only six months, there are already talks of the next versions of the console. According to a vague source cited by Australian web publication Smarthouse, a new console it names as PlayStation 4 is less than 18 months away.
Rather than being an entirely new console, the device will supposedly include the same architecture as the current console but with a new drive bay and attachment area. The new box is said to also include extensive software suite for the managing of content being streamed to a TV or Hi Fi source.
It appears that these updates to the current console aim to position the machine as more of a home entertainment hub rather than as a games machine. “We have even looked at a Sony home server based on PlayStation technology. This would allow consumers to connect home automation devices to the Sony server while also delivering online gaming and access to an extensive movie and music library,” said one Sony source.
The report also ties in comments made by the soon retiring Sony chairman, Ken Kutaragi, who spoke on his plans for PlayStation 4, 5 and 6. “As a matter of course, I have the vision of PlayStation 4, 5 and 6, which will merge into the network,” he said.
“The design concept of the Cell processor is the network processor.” Kutaragi said, adding that the network environment now makes his visions for a net-based games console possible. Although the PS3 hardware still has a long road ahead of it, Kutaragi could be hoping for future PlayStation generations to be compatible with the Cell processor to create the supercomputer network that Sony has boasted about.
It seems unlikely that the new PlayStation will be named with the numeral four, at least not within the next four years; but based on Sony’s comments and the shift that high-end machines are moving into the home entertainment space, a newer, differently positioned PlayStation box is possible.
In fact, Sony has already made such a product with the PlayStation 2. Released only in Japan, the PSX was a general home media center based on PlayStation 2 hardware with digital video and DVD recorder functionality. The PSX was a product under Sony Corp. instead of Sony Computer Entertainment, further reflecting the different position of the device.
The PSX was released in Japan on December 13, 2003, but never saw the light of day in other territories due to poor sales projections.

Microsoft is gonna announce new xbox 360 with new chip (65nm chip)

So, sony should bring out new console ASAP

If you are thinking it's XBOX 360 Elite, No. The only changes in Elite version are 120Gig HDD compared to 20gig HDD, integrated HDMI slot, bundled HDMI cable, black paint. Nothing else is changed. It still doesn't ship with the HD-DVD drive nor there is any change in the chip

nyways XBOX 360 Elite with 120 gig hdd , HDMI port for 20k what else could u ask for man , PS3 is a looser in this Generation of consoles .

Sony's already panic striken since XBox and Wii have taken the lead. But, if they try to do release the new console in a hurry, there might be more disappointment.

Sony's already faced the setback of Laptop batteries. Hence they are already facing trouble from MS and Nintendo.

I never heard of that sort of thing. From the beginning of PS3 i heard one word "sucks".

yes. this is what many said in the beginnning (before release)

but after multiple delays, bugs in BRD, unable to play PS2 games, very few titles available, few thousands of PS3 available during launch worldwide.........

Sony's PlayStation 2 achieved sales dominance, with nearly twice the sales of all its competitors combined with over 100 million shipped, making the Playstation 2 the best selling console in history. Microsoft's Xbox came in second with 24 million and the Nintendo GameCube was third with 21 million.

Dunno about others but I will certainly ask for an HDMI cable. It costs too much.

i don't think we'll be having HDMI compatible components nytime sonn here so no need spendin money on da cable

PS2 is HOT because of the vast availability of pirated game also PS2 was also popular because DVD was very easy to get. The things have changed in PS3. Due to sony jumping on Blu-Ray wagon very early which have crashed PS3 and the future of PS is at danger.

Let us see when will india get Blu-Ray maybe in next 5 or 8 years?. What about net connection?. Or what abou BluRay readers and writers?.

Thinking about all this Sony have dug their own grave.

well 360 uses dvd too , n all new games will be available on it so ny knowledgeable pira** will buy 360 now

I played a game on PS3 in a nearby gaming parlour and I must say that the title (something like motomadness) took years to load. Its damn slow. I mean 40K and you dont get speed, let alone good titles(The parlour only had 3 titles; one FPS and 2 racing).
