Cool PS3 @ 80GB!!! & what about 160GB!!!!

Is the 80 GB version of the PlayStation 3 coming sooner than previously thought? Kotaku has just posted a picture of a PS3 box sporting a 80GB label on the box.

We first broke news of the "elite" version of the PS3 nearly a month ago, based on a filing with the Federal Communications Commission. Sony had sent the FCC a change in specification, asking permission to change the SKU of the 60GB PS3 to a PS3 unit with an 80GB hard-drive and a Bluetooth enhancement feature.
Sony currently sells two versions of the PlayStation 3. The cheaper model has a 20GB drive and the more expensive model has a 60GB drive.

Adding more fuel to the fire was Sony Computer Entertainment America's decision to phase out the 20GB model and Sony spokesperson Satoshi Fukuoka confirming that the company was looking at larger hard disks. According to the guy - 'For users who vigorously store (games and other entertainment content) in the PS3, 20[GB] is probably going to be too small, and even 60[GB] may not be big enough eventually.' But although the PS3's hard drive may get an upgrade other fundamental components of the machine won't be altered, according to Fukuoka. "We are not likely to change its core components and functions such as the Cell, RSX, Blu-ray drive and network capability," he said.

This shot, of which we are rightly suspicious but believe to be (gulp!) real, shows up in my mailbox showing a new model number (98004) and a larger hard drive spec (80 gigabytes/80 gigaoctets).

According to the box, virtually nothing has changed save the HDD, and based on the dual-language descriptors, it looks to be a Canadian model.
Based on the quality of the shots and the lack of official confirmation from Sony, we're still calling this rumor for now.

[One of the Sources]

Hmm.. is that another shot @ MS... Microsoft had recently announced plans for a new version of the competing Xbox 360 console. The Xbox 360 Elite packs a 120GB drive - against 20GB on existing machines - and an HDMI (high-definition multimedia interface) connection not offered on current models.

And... guyz... wait till u see this... a 160GB PS3 !!!

lolz gaurav, typo man.

Anyway, in India XBOX 360 is winning & will win. Reason, it used DVDs unlike BD-ROM means pirating games is easy & I hope u all know how important piracy is in India for a console to win the market share.

Besides, XBOX 360 is cheaper then PS3. Unless you are filthy rich who has all X360,PS3 & Wiiiiiiiiiiiii.

Having a harddisk won't matter in india keeping in mind the sorry state of broadband panetration. Even XBOX Live isn't available, a XBOX 360 Core system with 64 MB memory card is good enough in India, harddisk is waste here.

well 64 mb card is not enuf to save a lotta games so , hdd is a better option , oodles of space to save games ( i have friends who have like a dozen ps2 cards coz there's scarcity of space to save games . )

also it it will be used to store game updates , etc .

PSIII has already landed in India at a price tag of Rs.39000/-. PSII prices in India will be slashed to around Rs.7500/-.

^^yeah i saw today's full page ad in newspaper in chennai of availability of PS3 for 39k.

I think 40 k for a game console(i know it has other features too)is too much to pay for. Also in same ad some lousy games were advertised as avasilable for PS3 like GodFather....Others i havent even heard of with each one costing Rs.2800.

does this HDD upgrade increase prices further ??

I think prices will drop further to compete with the grey market. At present grey market in India is a whooping 70% of the gaming console market. Sony has realized it and others will follow.

i sincerely hope that sony fail in their attempt to market a disastrous product in India . you could very well be buy a 360 and a Wii rather than a PS3.
