Thumbs up Microsoft SilverLight

Microsoft's answer to Adobe Systems' Flash Player has an official name--Silverlight--and a coveted target audience: media and entertainment companies bringing video to the Web.

The company intends to release a beta of Silverlight, formerly called Windows Presentation Foundation/Everywhere (WPF/E), at the Mix07 conference for designers and Web developers in Las Vegas later this month.

Along with the public launch of Silverlight, Microsoft plans to announce a number of media and advertising agency partners that have shown interest in using the software. Partners include Major League Baseball, online video broadcaster Brightcove, Netflix and Akamai Technologies

Whoop-de-doo. Another thing for web developers to learn if they want to keep their jobs.

Hmm, i don't like this actully. Insted of making a competitor for flash, MS should have worked with adobe to WPF-fy Flash.

Flash is a standerd out there, & now with Apolo, it is coming to desktop in the form of Applications or Web based application. Just help adobe in accelerating it in WPF insted of making your own. Whats the point

You're right, but you have to use what you've learnt. You can't just learn it, and do nothing with it because you're always learning.

point is Flash is Very Very Very Resource Hungry ( as is any other Adobe Product ) , SilverLight will be an optimized way to offer multimedia capabilities , even if first it is limited to Windows users .

Not necessary. I have seen many flash sites that was fast and hardly any resource. Also now that microsoft launch this software adobe will learn their lesson this makes them to create better software until then adobe rocks.

Ya this can be a point. Adobe has no competition out there, & Vista is all rocking everywhere which means WPF is the future out there. Also, WPF being the foundation for upcoming Windows OS means developers must provide WPF application & technology. Atleast this way Adobe will be forced to optimise & streamline flash & actionscript (it is too hard to code, trust me compared to WPF/XAML)

Adobe has to do one thing now, make Flash in such a way that an application or file made for webpage can be easily ported to OS. WPF/E will never gain market big enough to shake Flash, never. Reason, WPF/E requirs DX10 which is available only for Vista. There are so many other OS out there in which Flash is cross platform. This is the reason I said that MS should have worked with Adobe to provide WPF acceleration & features in Flash itself insted of making there own version Silverlight, or if not that make it compatible with Flash so that other OS can use it too.
