Default Ubuntu plans to go "ultra-orthodox" with 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon)

As Ubuntu's new release 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) reaches its final stages, today Mark Shuttleworth announced the beginning of Ubuntu's next development cycle which will be code named "Gutsy Gibbon" and is expected to release on 18th October 2007.

The biggest announcement made by Mark was that, with 7.10 Ubuntu will take an "ultra-orthodox view of licensing" which means that Ubuntu will be going "completely free". Thus, the official release will not be shipping with any firmware, drivers, codecs or applications that does not provide full rights of modification, remixing and redistribution. (Bye-bye wireless firmware and proprietary drivers?)

Some major features that are planned to be included in Gutsy Gibbon are:
  • Unattended installation infrastructure
  • Much better deployment on Server front with integrated management tools, and
  • Default inclusion of composite on desktop
More brain storming and features planning for Gutsy Gibbon will happen in the upcoming Ubuntu Developer Summit which is scheduled to happen from May 5th to 11th in Andalucia, Spain.
