Wink After Y2K.....Now its time for the DST bug!!

After Y2K.....Now its time for the DST bug!!
DST change may affect users of calendar software like Microsoft Outlook

A few years ago people were purchasing generators, stocking up on food and preparing for the worst. When it was said and done, Y2K came and went with relatively little fuss considering the attention it was given.

Now it doesn't mean that you need to get your generator out of storage but the DST date change does present a somewhat similar situation. Those that work in the IT departments of mission critical real-time databases may want to make sure they are prepared. The Information Technology Association of America cautioned this week that “Organizations could face significant losses if they are not prepared.”

For everyone else, it is just an excuse to show up late for work. If you do have a lunch date with that blonde from Marketing, make sure you synchronize watches at some point during the morning.

It is possible that all of your lunch dates (or any other appointments for that matter) between March 11th and April 1st could be suspect since the DST change may affect users of calendar software. Microsoft Outlook calendar addicts should consider downloading Microsoft's "tzmove" utility to address time zone changes.

Duh ... Its not a bug .. this problem occured because US Senate extended the DST period to one more month last year .. So it will end one month early.

It doesnt affect users in India directly, but you may have a look at this page if you run a web server / db server on Windows.

Yep, it is the effect of the extended DST period. The result can be directly seen in U.S and Canada. But other countries also need to take this precaution. Especially the one who have their servers located in US. Most of the Credit card companies and financial sectors do have their servers located in US. It is a must update for them, else they would face serious billing related issues. At user level in India, the update is necessary for persons who travel overseas. And dude..since an update is available, it can be quoted as a "bug".

This is not a major issue as each and every company that has sensitive data or that heavily rely on realtime ops have already applied the patches. In my company, it's applied everywhere. So, this by no means is like Y2K.
