Default "Thoughts on Music" -Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs
February 6, 2007

With the stunning global success of Apple’s iPod music player and iTunes online music store, some have called for Apple to “open” the digital rights management (DRM) system that Apple uses to protect its music against theft, so that music purchased from iTunes can be played on digital devices purchased from other companies, and protected music purchased from other online music stores can play on iPods. Let’s examine the current situation and how we got here, then look at three possible alternatives for the future.

To begin, it is useful to remember that all iPods play music that is free of any DRM and encoded in “open” licensable formats such as MP3 and AAC. iPod users can and do acquire their music from many sources, including CDs they own. Music on CDs can be easily imported into the freely-downloadable iTunes jukebox software which runs on both Macs and Windows PCs, and is automatically encoded into the open AAC or MP3 formats without any DRM. This music can be played on iPods or any other music players that play these open formats.

(Steve Jobs is the CEO of Apple, which he co-founded in 1976. Apple leads the industry in innovation with its award-winning desktop and notebook Mac computers, OS X operating system, and iLife and professional applications. Apple is also leading the digital music revolution with over 88 million of its iPod portable music players sold and over two billion songs legally downloaded from its iTunes online store.

Steve also co-founded Pixar Animation Studios, which has created seven of the most successful and beloved animated films of all time: Toy Story, A Bug's Life, Toy Story 2, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles and Cars. Pixar has won 20 Academy Awards and its films have grossed more than $3.2 billion at the worldwide box office to date. Pixar merged with The Walt Disney Company in 2006 and Steve now serves on their board of directors.

Steve grew up in the apricot orchards which later became known as Silicon Valley, and still lives there with his wife and three children.)

No one likes DRM except for the music companies and Steve Jobs puts forth a very valid point when he says that DRM does not even benefit the music companies.

DRM will go no doubt. Bill Gates ws saying the same thing few days ago and now Steve Jobs too. This clearly means these big corporations are not very comfortable with the idea of DRM.

This will never happen. Record companies will never remove DRM & Apple will never open fairplay, cos they know, they are surviving just because of iPod+iTunes

Duplicate thread with a different, misleading and inaccurate topic title.
Already posted: "Thoughts on Music" -Steve Jobs
The reason I am saying that the title is misleading is because Steve Jobs has made it abundantly clear in his post that Apple has no control over whether they should or shouldn't keep the DRM system employed in the iTunes Music Store.

Reported.

Yay! I get to report a thread posted by a moderator.

Is this a troll post to devitate this thread or what... Who was talking about MS or Zune here?

Zune is just 3 months old, however....one thing which even you cannnot deny that MS is in a much better position cos there Playforsure is compatible with almost all the mp3 players out there. They opened there DRM scheme for other to use & this was a success in DRM based music market, buy from any market & play on any player despite of having DRM. So if Apple is saying, opening the Fairplay will result in security breach they are just lieing. Playforsure was open & there was hardly any security breach, while Fairplay has been cracked many times already

I am not talking about Microsoft's playforsure. I am talking about the Zune DRM'ed files that do not play on any other player.

Be it Apple or Microsoft, all corporations are the same. Their primary aim is to earn money. Stop lying.

Wonder what this means then. There are companies, like Yahoo Music which is also saling songs without DRM, on a testing phase & the responce is gr8.

How about this, sale a song at 99 cent with DRM or $1.3 without DRM in mp3 or mp4 or wma format. The user has a choice now, either pay a bit high & get non-DRM music, or pay less & get DRM music.
