A Black Google Would Save 3,000 Megawatts a Year Globally !!!
a white web page uses about 74 watts to display, while an all black page uses only 59 watts... do a little math and see what could be saved by moving a high volume site to the black format...

Black Google Would Save 3,000 Megawatts a Year
Check out this Digg about Google.
A guy calculated something which is important to the whole world of computing 
From what it seems, an all-white web page uses about 74 watts to display, while an all-black page uses only 59 watts. Taking Google searchpage which gets about 200 million queries a day into account. Let's assume each query is displayed for about 10 seconds; that means Google is running for about 200000000*10/3600 = ~555,000 hours every day on some desktop in the world. Assuming that users run Google in full screen mode, the shift to a black background will save a total of 15 (74-59) watts. That turns into a global savings of 8.3 Megawatt-hours per day, or about 3000 Megawatt-hours a year.
Think of the power-savings if Google turned black!!!

Moral of the story : Do some whacko calculations. Bask in the glory of a million page views.
Isn't Google saving enough power already by giving people accurate search results quickly?
BTW, another bit of info, power to keep it's servers up is one of Google's major expenses. Infact, I believe they recently got a whole lot of solar cell arrays to score some points as an environment friendly company.

In fact if magazines start listening to requests by users and provide stuff in discs, that will save a lot of power. Not everyone will be needing to download same thing over and over again.

Making the switch from white to black pages is not the point here - that will never happen. Devices just have to be more efficient in terms of energy consumption.

Well, the reason for saving power is not justified for LCD screens. For LCD screens, it doesn't matter displaying black or white. Both consume same power!

It is kinda lotz of strain to eyes reading something on ablack background. just for savinf some power it is not a good idea to put strain on wye. Google plz never intend to move to a black background.
