Agreed, Microsoft claims it doesn't slow PC's but the very requirement of 512 MB/1GB Ram shows how much resources it takes. 90% of our computers won't still be able to run Vista!

I completely disagree

The moment I switch off Aero in Windows Vista Ultimate,
the RAM Utilisation gets reduced to 12 % from 27 %

Where does this lead to ?

The main thing which vista requires is more RAM i.e 2GB

I agree,aero effect doesn't slow pc...

well there are motherboards in the market which have integrated VGA (intel's gma x3000) which is fully capable of running Aero, so it could be possible that vista's hardware requirements are over-hyped...

Since when did non-Microsoft employees ever agree with Microsoft claims?

Exactly.

At least Vista's licensing policy made sure my upgrade will be Fedora or Suse way instead of Vista. Check Vista's EULA from Microsoft.com and see how Vista makes activation, upgrades and hardware additions a pain to remember.. I didn't mind XPs WGA but Vista is overboard.

It depends, On an AGP card runnning in 4x mode, performance does suffer a lil. But altogether, its not much.

I have used Vista and except from the basic eyecandy,i found it really slow and not of any use.though XP too is not perfect either.but XP may be better.

I use Debian Sid GNU/Linux.Linux can do almost anything except gaming(due to lack of support from game companies as with mac)/few games are there, that will work like a charm.office, multimedia all other things are supported in linux.aero feels like antique piece when compared to Linux use of compiz-fusion or beryl.
despite all this a standard Gnome Linux(ubuntu, fedora etc) can live with 256 MB of RAM with 3D compiz and eyecandies.
see compiz-fusion effects below:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4Fbk52Mk1w
if you are interested in Linux, get a Ubuntu dvd with this month's Digit.use it!save reducing e-waste too.Vista pushed the need for high config pc's(min ram=1GB for avg performance+graphics card!) to run hence in many countries blind followers dump their otherwise usefull pc for vista.read below link:

So Aero doesn't slow Vista. Vista is slow by itself... Interesting that Microsoft should say this out in the open..

And ya, compared to windows vista, opensuse is running much faster on my 1.6 ghz celeron, 1 GB ram, 915 lappy
