Video functionality is available in Media Center much before.

Music Converter?
AAC codec is the best of iTunes.
Really a high quality codec.
But FLAC is a successful competitior which is the best lossless codec.
DB Poweramp support FLAC.
The mp3 convertion is not too better in iTunes, Nero and DB Power amp is the best.
