Default Meet CuBox – A Tiny ARM Powered Media Centre Capable of Running Ubuntu - OMGUbuntu.co

The march of mini ARM-powered PCs continues with the release of the ‘CuBox’ developer platform by tech company Solid Run.

The 2-inch3 device, which uses just 3 watts of power in use, can stream and decode 1080p content with too much of a sweat. It’s this feature in particular that has seen the device positioned as an ideal Android TV/Linux Media Center.

Although Android is shipped on the device, demos of Ubuntu and XMBC are also provided for developers purchasing the device.

Specs:

Supports Android, Ubuntu, XMBC, similar
800 MHz dual issue ARM PJ4 processor with 512KB L2 cache, VFPv3, wmmx SIMD
1080p Video Decode Engine
OpenGL|ES 2.0 graphic engine
HDMI 1080p Output
1GByte DDR3 @ 800MHz
Gigabit Ethernet, SPDIF (optical audio), eSata 3Gbps, 2xUSB 2.0, micro-SD, micro-USB (console)
Infra-red receiver
Pre-orders are currently being taken for the next batch of boxes, at $135/€99.

The CuBox joins an ever-expanding range of low-cost low-power ARM devices either shipping with or suitable for running Ubuntu. Th USB-sized $25 RaspberryPi and as-yet-unpriced Cotton Candy are two of the more hotly anticipated of these.

P.S. This might also remind some people of Apple Mactini & Mactini Nano.
