Default Qualcomm Snapdragon roadmap talks of 2.5 GHz quad-core CPUs

Your phone is only going to get faster and better in the future, according to Qualcomm, as it's outlined the next step for its Snapdragon processor at its Innovation Qualcomm event in Istanbul.

The company’s processors, which power the majority of today’s smartphones from HTC to BlackBerry and beyond, will boast even higher speeds, better graphics, and greater connectivity in the near future, Qualcomm’s Cristiano Amon told those gathered.

In numbers terms that means a single, dual, or quad-core chip with speeds of 2.5GHz, almost double of what is currently available on the market.

Those who like to quote specs will also like the fact that the new S4 class chipset will offer Adreno Graphics, 3D, 1080p HD, as well as sporting 3G and LTE connectivity as standard.

The new processors will be available to manufacturers by the end of the year, and expected to be in consumers' hands at the start of 2012, says Qualcomm.

That means we should see new 2.5GHz phones launching at Mobile World Congress in February, the world’s largest phone trade show.

But it’s not all about speed according to the company’s CEO, Paul Jacobs:

“It’s not about how many cores or how many gigabytes, it’s how well you can optimise the system.”

So far, Adreno GPUs haven't won many battles on the mobile front, but Qualcomm will obviously try and change that. They next Adreno will be using new architecture and will have either two or four cores. So the top model of the next Snapdragon generation should have 8 processing cores - four for the CPU and four for the GPU - amazing right?
Finally, Qualcomm will also make sure that it's not lagging behind in terms of network radios and it will be equipping its next gen chipsets with 3G and LTE antennas. With the LTE network coverage expected to rapidly expand over the next couple of years we can't see anyone being shocked about that.

These advances in Mobile technology gives me a nostalgia, of just what happened with PC's.
At this rate it won't be long, when we could see, wrist computers, in a race to achieve GHz of speeds.

Nothing like that will happen unless they improve the battery. I think batteries will always be a limiting factor in development of portable devices.

^ +1,Although just for benchmark purposes they can strech these mini's hard, may be not ahead of pc, but at least just behind them. Plus size limitation will also be a factor. I mean shrinking too much wont be possible in portable devices as compared to pc's.

^^ Well, and because of this exact problem (shrinking problem), there are being developments in 3D processors.

I know very well about the Tri-gate transistors. Well, for sure they've solved the shrinking problem due to physical limitations(& of course excess heat dissipation), which further hindered higher-clocking of processors, thus vioalting moore's law. So we can again see soaring clocking of processors!
