Well, for one, this decision goes on to prove the worth of Open Source OS like, Ubuntu.
And also, government may have realized this better late, then ever, that it's no point in spending on the installation of windows, when all they (court's staff) is going to use it for document editing stuff.
Lastly, using Linux on the systems would be a good decision, since now they won't have to worry about silly viruses and stuff. Also, this would increase the geek quotient for the staff, who will witness that there is a life outside windows! (Pun intented).
And the irony is I myself a Windows user, but soon to switch to Linux.

Yes, & i think open office & firefox is all that they'll require to cover most of their computing needs.
Good decision.

Lol, NOW I got the point of your post!
Well, I really believe that switching to Linux would follow in other governmental departments too, and I hope all the money that they save from the softwares are put to some other good use, like building better infrastructures, and hiring educated staffs!

Courts maintain database of all records with them which is being real time available to the public and lots of online work is over court system so any robust OS selection is a welcome step..
Re: POWER OF OPEN SOURCE! All Courts in India to use Ubuntu!
I think by now linux is rather ready to be deployed in the kind of applications the government normally has. I mean its highly customizable, and you can have distros which automatically start with a single full-screen app instead of anything else and have it shutdown when the app closes, you can have a very high level of access control and security and finally for normal document processing linux is more than capable.
If they implement this everywhere a LOT of money can be saved.

It's coming I think. We at NABARD have adopted OpenOffice in 2008-09 and since last year we are purchasing 10% of our PCs with Ubuntu. Guess something's in the air.
