Cool Nokia Moves N-Series to Linux, Kicks Symbian

World's Largest Smartphone manufacturer Nokia Oyj has announced that its flagship line, N-series, will use Linux MeeGo operating system. Nokia N8 will be the last N-series handset to have Symbian OS according to the source.

I personally think this is a wise decision keeping in mind that already been bitten by iPhone in the market share, the fast growing Android based mobile handsets are posing threat to the dominance of Nokia in many markets. Although Symbian is still way ahead of Android and iPhone (according to Gartner research, for fiscal 2008-09 50 Android and 250 iPhone were sold for every 1000 Symbian based phones), this move by Nokia could be considered a wise decision because Linux being an Open Source attracts developer community from world over. This increases the support and usability of the handset by leaps and bounds.

Finally Nokia giving more attention to MeeGo which it truly deserves. Only if they had done the same with Maemo about a couple of years ago. Anyways, better late then never.

@Sam.Shab..well said..now it's good for the end users as they will have more choices rather than sticking with symbian. I love Nokia !!

but why leave N8 on Symbian, it would have been better to have MeeGo on N8 too. I fear N8 will go down the memory lane just like shinkasen, because ppl will obviously look forward to having MeeGo instead of latest Symbian ^3

What about Symbian 4 ? Seriously doubt nokia wants to kill it.
They should launch a NEW SERIES for mee-go OSes to avoid confusion.

hehe yes...I have read it on their site that they have almost completed the work on Symbian4...why is this company venturing in too many directions...should just keep progressing in single lane...Symbian and keep modifying it to take on Android and iPhone OS...

It doesn't even matter what platform nokia phones are since a hypothetical Nokia WTF will remain the same hypothetical Nokia WTF all the time.

None of their phones EVER get OS upgrades the way android phones go from 2.0 to 2.1 or the way iPhone OS goes from version 2 to version 3.

N900 was hyped as the next gen platform and now it wouldn't be getting Mee-Go though its hardware is very clearly capable of running it.

The only upgrade nokia releases are firmware upgrades.

As much as I liked nokia phones for their durability, battery, standards compliant features (3.5mm audio jack and microUSB port), etc I think its time to say goodbye to their phones. They just don't seem to want to entertain users of their previous flagship product.

Exactly and i thot that Nokia bought Symbian for some million dollars and Made it OPEN source so as to catch attention from developers worldwide... Dnt know what Nokia is playing at.. I think Symbian is more mature than iPhone or Andriod (I m no nokia fan)...
