Microsoft now With Free, Web-based Office

Microsoft announced “lightweight” versions of its Office products that will be free and web-based — a direct competitor to Google Apps.

The free products will include Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and OneNote, and will be available to anyone with a Microsoft Live account.

Wat about YouTube? It was not google's. Google bought it.

FYI,

Google is not the one that created search engine yet they rule it
MS is not the one that created OS and yet they rule it
Nokia is not the one that created cell phone and yet they rule it
HP is not the one that created PC and yet they rule it.

It doesn't matter who created. What matters is the implementation and in that MS and Google are masters.

Microsoft's model has always been to sell software, and to push users to buy new versions of the same old thing every 18-36 months, by ladling on one new feature after another. By the time Microsoft heaved Office 2003 out the door the suite had become such a bulky product, with so many buried features and functions, that the company had to completely recreate the user interface to "expose the functionality" in the next version, Office 2007. This business model had served the company well until now: Office brings in $15 - $20 billion a year in revenues, second only to Microsoft's Windows franchise. But the sales curve has flattened, even as Google Docs gained traction.

Google's model is to sell contextually targeted advertising and to tie its products into its search engine. Microsoft, with its Bing search engine and the Web-based version of office, Office Web, is pursing that same "free" business model perfected by Google.

But Microsoft's corporate culture is still built around the idea of selling the user ever more features. Teasing users with a free, dumbed down Office online and then trying to upsell them with a "more is better" strategy could easily backfire.

office 2k -> office 2k3 -> office 2k7. again just few features changed.

Google docs is still considered as no-threat to ms office and this guy thinks it has gained traction???

When every one is thinking that this is a smart move to attack Google, this guy thinks it could easily backfire. What a lame analyst!!!!

Still they created bing after failing on windows live search... keep repeating the same mistake again...
And office, look how costly it is...
I respect MS on the OS front.

The problem with them is that they want to monopolize everything..

well...i use notepad and OOO for my writing , am happy with it, and it takes care of all my needs.
well online writing , i haven't done that.
