Default AMD 12core proccy

Advanced Micro Devices has demonstrated its twelve-core microprocessors operating in a 4-way server just days after it said it would start selling six-core chips in May, 2009. Thanks to multi-chip-module nature of the code-named Magny-Cours processor, creation of such chip was a relatively easy challenge.

AMD Opteron 6000-series code-named Magny-Cours with twelve processing engines will be released in the first quarter of 2010, according to some reports. However, already now AMD can demonstrate the chip to public and customers to show off its benefits compared to competing platforms and technologies.

The world is moving towards tiled CMP architecture. The day won't be far when CPUs will haf hundreds of core like the current GPUs. We are working on such a project for CPUs at our university. A serious concern as of now is cache consistency due to data sharing by various cores. The current consistency models slow down the performance.

The CPU-GPU gap is converging and tiled CMP is the future

Nice. I think the yield will be pretty poor though. More the cores, lesser the yields. So we can expect 11 core, 10 core, 9 core, etc CPUs in plenty while real 12 core CPUs manufactured will be less. This alone can drive their prices up.

And when will AMD do something to implement multithreading in a single core ?

Increasing number of cores has nothing to do with the yield. Its the die area which affects the yield. The smaller the die area, the better the yeild. With the current technology, they can cram a lot of cores in a specific area.

^^You sure ? Because AMD Phenom II CPUs are as big as Nehalem CPUs while having much lesser power. It was one of the reasons why AMD was said to be a lot less profitable than Intel.

12 cores? I doubt any games/applications would use 12 cores. Anyways, good to see more than 4 cores

^^Thats why gamers still buy Dual Cores while multitaskers get maximum no. of cores.

Guys to get most out of the core we need OS which can schedule the thing in a good manner so that we can get max performance but right now i think we dont have such good options to deal with....

Compiling a new kernel for the cores available on your system makes a lot of performance difference.

The die yield is given by the forumla:
Die yield = K / Die area (or size), where K is a constant depending on various factors.

WTF ? Don't you EVER understand ?
They are targeted at DIFFERENT MARKETS.
Gamers want 5GHz Dual Cores while some others want 3GHz Hexa Cores.
