When students see her using her Ubuntu laptop for her course, hopefully, it will bring about some awareness that there is life without Microsoft and their products.

Thanks.
Speaking aside.
As a sincere request to everyone, please dont call anyone as dumb or fool. Not everyone is born genius. As geeks ourshelves, we feel, oh its so easy and this and that and laugh mericlessly on someone; but we forget that people need help at the intial stage. But the truth is that for someone who doesn't know already, THIS IS DIFFICULT.
This story is amusing indeed yes but not mock inducing.
So guys before mocking someone, please bear in mind, there would be a field or two where you and I would be as bad or even worse. (Me in Cricket )
Reading the story in question, the girl in question has been helped and THAT is good.
What is not good is this:

Sadly, thousands of Ubuntu fans didn’t care about this woman’s struggle to enroll in online courses. They didn’t care whether this young woman went to college or not. They cared about the reputation of Ubuntu.

Too bad for GauravCJ.. and i was thinking that i might get banned .. but seriously.. this isn't the fault of Ubuntu as the title of the thread says.. MVP ji.. try to think about a better title next time you post.. and Ubuntu is wrongly being blamed for all this stuff..

Re: Ubuntu Causes Girl To Drop Out of College
The girl is an idiot<period>
Seriously..all it takes is a google search to find out replacement for MS Office for Ubuntu..infact its built in. And then how hard is it to install windows either. Whats even more surprising is that she didn't even have any knowledgeable friends at hand to help her.

I second that.
I have a sister 2 years younger to me, and she is a pure non-geek. But she still figured out how to turn off my archlinux (while I was downloading something. GRRR... ) by just noticing that there is a menu button which she has seen me click several times.
At the same time, I also have a friend who claims to be a Windows Geek (and he really DOES know several things, and can find his way around registry and can write batch files easily) who thinks its hard to navigate when the "taskbar" (actually, its the xfce4-panel) is on the top.
[quote]She is a paying customer so she deserves to get support from Ubuntu on phone just like she can get on phone via Microsoft. We in India pirate, but in USA piracy is low so since they are paying, they demand support.[/quote[
She paid for the hardware, not the software. There is an option in dell.com to buy support for ubuntu, but I guess she didn't buy that thinking that she is too smart to need technical support.

Actually, there IS something like that. You just need to be curious enough to look around in Ubuntu. Its an icon right in the upper gnome bar. It was one of the first things I noticed (apart from the obviously UNIQUE experience of having two "taskbars") when I first booted from ubuntu live CD.
And yeah, when you compare my status back then, a barely 15 year old who hadn't the slightest clue what linux was or even what the BIOS was, and I was completely ignorant of most of the things in this world. I doubt you can tell that I was smarter then than this adult girl from "the most developed nation in the world".

E.M.F stands for Electromotive Force, an electrical potential energy which cause the current to flow in a circuit. It is taught in class 10 and in detail in +2 Non-Med.
Like MetalHead's case I too have a younger sister 3 year younger to me and she too is a complete n00b in computers. We enrolled her this year in a B.Tech program in Computer Science and it is my duty now to not to let her be a n00b but she likes it that way only.
One day before joining college, as she was becoming an Orkut addict, I tried to block the Orkut on my system using that Hosts file modification method and when I came home the lil' bugger was scrappin' away with all her might.
When I asked how'd u do it, she said,"Simple! Googled for Proxies and used the first one that came as a result." I felt like a complete J@ck@$$ at that moment but happy too in a way that my little sister does know a thing or two about computers and some that too which I don't.

From a UX point of view, A welcome screen in your face at first bootup like Windows Welcome center is better then an icon tucked away in the corner

Girls cannot survive without Google & Orkut. They will learn anything if it relates to Orkut.
My sisters knows everything about the Orkut Interface but gets confused when using Windows Live Webmail

EMF could also mean electro-magnetic field.
Seriously, the hate attitude being displayed out here toward the girl is just crazy. What are you guys trying to prove - that everyone MUST know Linux? Merely using Linux does not make you a competent programmer or an expert computer user.
Sure, she was lazy in not Googling/Yahooing for the solution but you can't really criticize them for not knowing how to do that. What we take for granted cannot be assumed to be true for someone who lives in the middle of nowhere. There are a literally tons of people in India who've never used a computer, let alone surf the web or call tech support. Are they utter imbeciles who deserve to be ridiculed by all the so-called "elitists" on board?

Do you really think that Indian girls are more intelligent than their American counterparts?
Looks like you've never been to the U.S. You'd die of shame if you were to meet some of the female computer whizkids out there. Head over to any major university like GA Tech, Stanford, UCB etc. and they'll put you in your place.

Re: Ubuntu Causes Girl To Drop Out of College
Yes my Nucleus friend, u've gone to the core of the thread and u might not be able to say it so I say, This thread has turned into a thread for debating whether girls are smart when it comes to Computer or not whilst the thing is that the case with boys is also the same, u just need to prod around. Today I had my final Linux Viva and most of the boys of my class were stumped over the full form of M.B.R These are final year B.Tech I.T students I'm talking about. So please everyone, no matter how crazy or stupid a girl maybe in ur view, don't bash 'em here. Its a humble request from me otherwise u guys will have a Pandamic i.e. a Panda Pandemic.

Anyways, even though I am seriously offended by statement that the omniscient above me just passed, but this girl did some serious favour to herself by dropping out of the Technical College. If she doesn't even know how to buy a computer for herself, then she is much better doing something else than studying for engineering or something similar. She should feel that it is a blessing in disguise for her.

Well i feel it was just a n00by accident .... Neither Dell's fault nor Ubuntu's ......
Anyways if she couldnt help herself out of that kind of situation with the help of [so many] forums and possibly her techy friends, i dunno how she could have completed an online course [a self study kinda course] by herself ........
