Firefox and Chrome Run Gmail Twice as Fast as IE, Says Google

Google has taken a more aggressive approach to moving users away from Internet Explorer, recommending that Gmail users install Firefox or Chrome if they want to see Gmail run "an average of twice as fast."

When you log into Gmail using Internet Explorer, you'll see a "Get faster Gmail" link in the set of links across the top of the page, which claims that Gmail runs an average of twice as fast on Firefox 3 or Chrome than it does IE.

Forget GMail. Even corporate AJAX apps which we develop, scream on FF, Chrome and Mac OS X's safari.

Opera lies in the moderate range when it comes to JS speed.

IE (any version) and Safari on Windows are pigs compared to these in JS execution speed. It is good if all web developers ditch IE and add notifications for IE users to download any other browser on earth. That alone can save several hours of their pain daily.

Though Opera and Windows' safari are slower, at least they are well behaved and follow what we say. IE always acts like a spoilt kid crying and kicking in the middle of the highway. Hope a truck crushes it soon.

Hope Google becomes that truck.

But Opera is definitely not slow overall. It has a fast engine, which makes up for its java speed issues, if any.

And I totally agree that Safari sucks on Windows. For webkit, I would advice everyone to rather use Google Chrome.

And on 256MB RAM, Firefox is faster on Windows XP than on ArchLinux, but upping the ram to 1GB changes the ratio as I saw in a friend's rig.

On windows XP, opera is better than firefox is better than chrome on handling multiple tabs. Opera's advantage is clearly shown only as we go extremely higher up in no. of tabs, but chrome is a different story. Feels slower than Firefox as I open 10 tabs in each.

Opera is not the slowest. It's UI is highly responsive and web rendering is fast. But its JS engine is no where as fast as FF or Chrome or Safari on OS X. But it definitely beats IE.

I wonder how you got better response with FF on XP than Arch. I find that FF on Ubuntu is a bit (just about 50 millisecs for each DnD) faster than on XP for our app. But both our systems ran with 1Gig RAM and a dual core CPU.

I said something similar. Opera's Java engine's slowness in speed is easily compensated for by its UI and web rendering, due to which, overall, it does not appear as slow as it really is.

Well, I get the same result with a 1GB Dual Core Machine, but on my home rig, with only 256MB RAM, arch looses by a tiny amount because windows xp uses less ram, and when there is a RAM shortage, OS using lesser RAM wins. But when RAM is not an issue, arch quickly gains the upper hand.

why can't someone sue M$ like EU did?? I mean isn't that possible???

Its not possible in all countries. But I wouldn't be surprised if M$ can be sued for anti-trust violations in India, considering the fact that Indian economy by nature discourages monopolies of private sector companies. (excuse my lack of legal knowlegde - I am no lawyer )

By the way, speaking of practical experiences, I find opera to be faster than Firefox but GMail's chat feature does not support Opera. (Damn them!)

IE Works good for me. I used it after reading this thread But it's too buggy sometimes

It depends on how you define speed. If it only means HTML & CSS rendering, Opera is good. This is enough for Web 1.0.

If Web 2.0 is to remain as open as Web 1.0 (without needing browser plug-ins to develop even simple business apps painlessly), JS standards compliance and JS speed are very important. In compliance, there is no doubt Opera is excellent. But in JS speed it has got to catch up with other browsers (except of course IE).

I too don't understand why GMail doesn't support chat on Opera when they could go as far as supporting an idiot browser like IE.
