Default Indian Kosmix to take on Google

Indian duo's Kosmix to take on Google
Two Indian engineers, who missed chances twice to buy Google nearly 10 years ago, have now raked in funds for their own site to rival the search engine giant.

The Indian duo have received funds worth $20 million from media and entertainment conglomerate Time Warner for their search site -- Kosmix.

"Anand Rajarman and Venky Harinarayan, the Indian Internet entrepreneurs, have received $20 million of funding from Time Warner for their site," The Telegraph reported on Tuesday.

Way back in 1998, Google founder Sergey Brin offered fellow Stanford University PhD students Anand Rajarman and Venky Harinarayan the chance to buy the now search engine giant for about $1 billion.

"They said no," the report published online said.

The very next year, the Indian pair with Amazon backing offered $443 million. But Brin and Google co-founder Larry Page had refused to accept less than $1 billion, the publication noted.

Now Kosmix has also got the backing of Motorola chairman and chief executive Ed Zander and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

"Google works if you know exactly what you're looking for. But if you have only got a vague idea, it can be quite hard to find the answer," Rajarman was quoted as saying.

"Kosmix allows you to browse a whole topic and suggests areas that it thinks you might be interested in," he added.

According to Rachel Lam, who is the senior vice president and group managing director of Time Warner Investments, Kosmix's technology and its innovations around the traditional online publishing model could represent a paradigm shift "in how targeted content is delivered to consumers".

"Kosmix's management team is in the forefront of a new online business model...and importantly, one that should continue to generate strong revenue growth, even in today's challenging economic environment," Rachel Lam was quoted as saying.

Ofcourse it wont. Many have tried to take on Google but have failed big time. Even so, Kosmix might have a few tricks up it's sleeve considering that these 2 Indians shared the same class as Larry Page and Sergey Brin AND were to buy Google. So who knows what can happen?
All I want to say to them is "best of luck" for their endeavour.

Buying Google and beating Google technology are two different things.
And the 'Google' they were offered was not the present day Google.

And anybody remember cuil.com? How many of you use it, or even recollected it until I mentioned now? These people are in the new for a short time, and then there is no news!

i belong to the highlighted category

but there is nothing wrong in trying to take on google... more of these wars might only mean better services offered to people like us

What a pathetic piece of joke! Google succeeded for it's awesome accuracy, mind boggling speeds and power search capabilities (damn, the operators rock!). This junk has none of that, so I hope their webserver catches fire and dies out with all their site assets....

Long live google......I just love the monopoly. At least someone doesn't have to try too hard.

beating Google is impossible until the shift in technology happens.
for now, for this age and current internet technology, Google is going to rule.

Seems to be inspired by the 'K' mania!!

I tried searching some random terms but found it quite slow even on my 512kpbs broadband. No doubt it would be too slow for dial-up users!!

Dude, some competition would always mean better services for us. It's not right to thrash-talk their efforts even before their service starts. (still in beta stages now) Even so, you are entitled to your opinion.

I think we could make Google an exception here. Google has continually been the trend-setter and its getting better by the day. Do you think Yahoo! or Live search are fierce competitors for Google?
