Default Sound drivers crashing

I have a windows xp service pack 2 professional 2002 edition system.
my problem is that my sound drivers seem to be crashing all the time. In winamp the error code 88780078.
which google tells me that my audio drivers are crashing...but why?
i have uninstalled and then reinstalled the audio drivers. Incidentally i have creative soundblaster integrated card.
how can i solve this? every time the sound driver crashes i have to restart the system to get back the sound...PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME WITH THIS!

yes, when the audio driver crashes, it affects all players, including video players....once that happens my only option is to restart my system.
i have the latest graphics and audio card drivers installed...and still the problem persists

Is your sound card onboard or you have added addition soud card??

Chances may be that..you have faulty sound card. Buy a cheap sound card (techcom, intex), should cost you around Rs. 500/-

How about reinstalling the entire motherboard drivers? that may work.

nope tried updating drivers didnt help. and this is something that has happened before,I remember this distinctly, and it was not a hardware issue because someone suggested i alter the registry that time and it solved everything. Its an on board sound card and thats the only one thats there
