Default Router causes loss of bandwidth

I use Reliance WiMax for my internet.

I recently set up a Dlink DIR 300 router to enable me to have wifi access to my internet.

However, I've noticed then when I don't use the router and connect to the internet directly, I get download speeds of 37 kb/s. Whenever I use the router in the middle, My download speeds never go above 24 kb/s.

My PC is the only machine using the connection. I see this problem whether I access the internet over the wifi, or even if I connect a LAN Cable to the router...

My question is, is this drop in bandwidth normal for router setups?
Is there any way to fix it?

I have set up port forwarding for port 80 to let me keep my web server online.

Any help will be appreciated.
