Why dont you give Klite Mega Codec Pack a try.
Its far better than VLC

KLite Mega Codec Pack/Media Player Classic has nearly all the codecs for ur needs.
And I found it better than VLC.

VLC player is the most versatile video player available for free that plays maximum video formats a player can ever handle, even it plays semi-downloaded video formats(currently being downloaded by download accelerator) or broken videos, even where media player classic or any other good player fails.
