I guess this happens when a virus corrupts some file/folder. As your explorer is crashing as soon as open your C drive, the corrupted file/folder should most probably be sitting atop your c drive.
Open up your command prompt and do the directory listing there, in case you find some unwanted file/folder, remove it. This should solve your problem. Alternatively, you can download some third party explorer for analyzing.
