how can I stop my desktop icon from vanishing and reappearing again

the desktop just shows the icons for 2-3 seconds and than disappers and reappers again . like it''s in a loop.plz help me as early as possible.my OS is : Windows XP

The hard drive may start to be constantly accessed by the winlogon process
