If the task manager itself does not work, then u must restart the system...i too faced this problem....or u must wait for the task manager to come...sometimes...it takes too long to appear, when the CPU usage is 100%.

Even I faced such problems and it has nothing to do with SP2. It is absolutely normal.

That means you have not explored the real power of xp. Get xp pro+sp2+av+firewall+anti-spyware+latest patches=most stable os ever developed by MS..

Yeah it happens to me too.
The main culprit in my PC was that Asus PC Probe which gives a series of message box which fills up the entire screen and no way to see the Task Manager.
Microsoft should come up with something where Task Manger should have the Maximum priority and should be the toppest windows.

One more problem with WinXP....I observed that just after installing the OS, it runs smoothly for first 20-30 days. Then it starts deterioting the speed and smoothness....I used to reinstall the OS every month..
One of my friend suggested me that we should defrag the primary drive every 20 days, especially when u r doing frequent installing and uninstalling s/w.

Correct. You should defrag your harddrive as well as registry. But bigger hdd require less defrag. as larger drives get less fragmented.

Agreed, in turn we can say that keep ur master drive as much empty as possible....Dont fill it with non-sense stuffs.....keep only OS and program related materials there.....
My policy is simple....make ur master drive of capacity 5 gb so that at any point of time at least 2 gb will remain free......try it out and ur os will be fast... 8)

or simply if u have a large capacity drive keep ONLY os in root drive ... nothing else ...
with XP alone my PC lasted for say 20-25days...
but with SP2 nd all the additional softwares it lasts for around 2 months unless i really screw sumthing up BAD!!
