Default Connect PC and Laptop using ethernet and play CS multiplayer

Hello,

I have a laptop and a deskptop. Can I play CS multiplayer by connecting both of them with a ethernet. If so, please explain exactly how to go about it. Is there any other means of doing it, example by modem etc.

Thanks.
