Default Personal Settings in Windows Lost on Shutdown. Help!

My friend's system has this peculiar problem. Whenever he shuts down his system, his Personal settings are not saved. How to enable it?
Secondly he has a genuine XP SP2 install on his system so is it possible to make a bootable CD from this install or if not then atleast illustrate the method to find out his Key so that he can save it and use in future. He's at the brink of losing 4K and his sanity if problem not resolved coz after exams he wants to re-format the system.

The problem seems to be one of its kind. Maybe someone who has faced such a problem before could help you.
As for finding the Windows key, you could use the Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder to retrieve the key.

Regarding to your first problem. Open regedit and goto:

Code:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
In right-side pane check for a DWORD value "NoSaveSettings". If its present, delete it.
