Ogg/Vorbis for sure; btw if file size is not an issue, why not FLAC? All my CD-rips are compressed using FLAC.

Both are lossy decoders , so nothing much to separate them technically,
only major thing is that Vorbis is Open Source and mp3 is patented, licensed and restricted.

Files in ogg format can be compressed much more than mp3 and still retain the sound quality. If I'm not mistaken an ogg file in 96 kbps has approximately the same sound quality as a 128 kbps mp3 file. Compressing music in ogg format is a good idea if you want to have the smallest file size while still retaining sound quality. But if small file size is not a consideration, then using the mp3 player would be better is it is supported in all music players.

Excellent sound quality means AAC..

AAC is the only one format for best compression and quality...
The clear example is the success of Apple IPOD...

I think, AAC is not as free as ogg vorbis and mp3..
the format is licensed and copyrighted by Apple Inc. and need a special codec to play in portable devices.

The success of a product does not mean that what it uses is the best in the market. It just means that the product was advertised well and was appealing to the users.

A lot of people buy an iPod because its popular, or because it "looks cool", or because "everyone has one", or because its the only mp3 player they know about.

A lot of people think it must be the best because of how popular it is, and that is exactly what is evident from your post.

Personally, I would go with ogg vorbis instead of mp3 (or aac or wma) because of the high quality I have had with ogg vorbis files while keeping a low file size.

If your choice depends purely on quality and not on file size (got a big hard drive, eh?) then go for FLAC instead, as audio is only compressed in a lossless way in FLAC.

thanks guys......by saying size does'nt matter, I did'nt mean I don't want compresssion......if its the case I can use the wav file itself rite????

I always prefer AUDIO CDs to mp3s because of audio quality....so I need to hear the songs in my PC or Phone with almost the same quality with a little compression......thats what i meant...................

^^ is it because egg and ogg rhyme?

yeah, ogg for me too, since the quality is better. But I dont really use it, since my phone cannot play ogg files.

FLAC does compress the audio file, but in a lossless way i.e. not even a single bit is lost while compressing. It is well supported, very stable and available for all major (and many minor) platforms/players.

I had the same question about few months ago, and I searched for the answer...
What I got/deduced was that, for mobile phones at least, MP3 is a better choice. Because,
(1) All (virtually) phones don't support OGG/Vorbis (may be yours also)
(2) Even WMA is supported by a select few.
(3) AAC is supported on most, but it was having shortcomings like reduced battery life. Also difference between AAC and MP3.
Manufacturers are mostly promoting WMA/AAC (or such formats) mostly because of DRM.

So, in your case (so I need to hear the songs in my PC or Phone with almost the same quality with a little compression) I recommend using MP3 with a higher bitrate like 192 kbps VBR and make sure you use an encoder which uses LAME.

For PC, it would be FLAC all the way because it uses loseless compression and is as good if not better than the proprietary codecs.
For your phone ogg/mp3 would suffice because I do not think extra sound quality would matter maybe due to limitation of the headphone/earphone (unless you own a very expensive one).
I think you have to go for mp3 becaue the Phone would probably not support ogg.
So since you have to share song b/w PC and phone use mp3. If phone supports ogg use ogg vorbis and if you listen to songs on PC only and you have good set of speakers go with FLAC. If your phone supports FLAC and has oodles of space then it would be FLAC all the way.

Go with FLAC, if your music devices support it.
FLAC stands for Free Loseless Audio Codec, so as the name suggests FLAC is loseless. The filesize can reduce upto 50% without any loss in quality.
