dear me, you have got most of your basics wrong, I am sorry to say.

XPS systems are made and sold by Dell
Alienware systems are made and sold by Alienware

there is a HUGE price difference between them and barely any competition between them. And in no way can one company phase out another company's products.

so simple answer: a big fat hairy NO

^^ actually Alienware is owned by Dell, but thats besides the point. Alienware and XPS target absolutely different clients...XPS can not be phased out in favour of Aliewares

Its like ford phasing out Fiesta to make way for the Ford GT

may be he is getting confused with XPS and XP (Windows XP) ... as for Windows XP it is surely going to 'rest in peace' in days tht can be counted on fingertips (27 days to be very precise as of this writing)... countdown has already begun.... feeling very nostalgiac about Windows XP...

from a link u gave : http://www.betanews.com/article/Dell...rly/1210777787

Quote:
In a blog post yesterday evening inspired partly by BetaNews' inquiries yesterday, Dell spokesperson Anne Camden flatly dismissed as "incorrect" a Wall Street Journal story Tuesday that stated the company was making plans to phase out its premium XPS systems, beginning with four models next month.

"XPS gaming systems will remain an important part of our gaming product portfolio," Camden wrote. "We don't plan an early phase-out of these systems as the WSJ incorrectly stated, and in fact will continue to refresh them to keep them on the front edge of gaming."

Hi, me too read bout it from many sources
but what i got to know is that, yup Dell is planning to promote Alienware PCs[ U wont see Dell nywhere on it coz dell want to keep alenware brand name as alienware itself], but they will still be having the XPS range in full glory.
They say XPS is their premium range, but Alienware is the luxurious range which is targeted only for real enthusiastic.
So u can expect the cheapest Alienware for almost double the price than the current top XPS M1730, ie will come around 2L.

[there was lots of threads goin on bout the acqisition of Alien by Dell on 2006 Q1 nd Q2]
