Clock Is Ticking for Windows 2000 Users !

Microsoft is set to phase out mainstream support for its Windows 2000 client and server releases on June 30.

Microsoft divides its support lifecycle into two phases: Mainstream and extended. Once a product enters the extended support period, Microsoft charges for support. Microsoft continues to provide security-specific hot fixes for products during extended support, but nonsecurity hot fixes may be obtained for extended-support products only by purchasing an "extended hot-fix agreement."

Windows 2000 is still the operating system of choice for a number of businesses, especially those in the small and midsize business space, according to industry watchers.

"The Update Rollup will contain all security-related updates produced for Windows 2000 between SP4 and the time when Microsoft finalizes the contents of the Rollup, and a small number of important non-security updates. It's designed to make it easy to keep Windows 2000 systems up to date with security updates and other important updates," the spokeswoman said.

But I thought, Microsoft in an other press meet, said Windows 2000 will be supported until 2008?

What? Windows 2000 was probably the best microsoft product to be released, being cleaner than XP ... this is not so good ...

As far know, Microsoft will support Windows 2000 in the form of extended support.

I think Microsoft is doing this due to launch of Longhorn next year.

Also if you keep on supporting Windows 2000 then others will not purchase Windows XP and even might not think about the Longhorn. So if you cut Windows 2000, major organisations will switch to Windows XP and Longhorn will be the next product being used.

I think this happened to Windows 98 when Windows XP SP1 was launched.

Tell me if I am wrong.

what will happen in India......where ppl nd businesses r still afraid to migrate to 2000 frm NT ...!!!!!
i have come across many companies....who r still running NT as their mainstream OS ... though i must say they r not "giants" of a company with huge turnarounds..but its all in the mind set...

No devil, I think either you should be using 2000 or XP or may be LINUX
