Problem while connecting to internet through LAN...

Recently I've been having this peculiar problem of being unable to connect to the internet through the LAN connection of my hostel.
I encounter this problem whenevr I resume my lappy from hibernation or for some reason such as power cut I get disconnected frm LAN for a while.....
On resuming the icon on the taskbar says-"Access-Local" whereas this is supposed to be "Access-Local and Internet" ie:-for me to be able to access the net.
Unplugging n replugging the LAN cable works sometimes but not often,same luck wid disabling and renabling the LAN connection.
Nowadays all I can do is keep my fingers crossed so tht I can connect to the Internet.
My OS is Vista Business.

Any suggestions as I am at my wits end....

It happened in all editions of Vista where the updates weren't installed. Just update using the "automatic update" feature all the updates and it will be solved.
You must also be facing the problem (most possibly) of not hearing anything when connected to headphones/earphones.
Finish the automatic update.
