Strange Boot Problem?

i was given the job 2 reinstall windows XP in my frnd p.c .......so i enter the bios & set 1st boot option as cd rom. then after putting the bootable XP disk in the cd rom i pressed ny key 2 boot after sum times nothing happens & the setup doesn't run instead of that old xp which is installed in his pc starts.... i also used digit ultimate boot cd but its also boot (its tools menu comes) but none of the keyboard keys work after that. (lik- press F1 for HHD tools)...... this is the 1st time i m facing this type of prob.

My Laptop has started similar problem today. When I try to start, the post screen remains for a longer time than normal. Then comes the option for XP start-up screen(safe mode/network/command prompt/lastgood confg)In any case the XP doesn't start. I am unable to boot from the CD even after the first boot option is from the CD. Is the BIOS has been corrupted or the HDD is gone. Hopw to diagnose the prob when the PC does not start even.
