If your MoBo has onboard graphics then the sharing is already in place and I think the shared limit is 256MB but I am not sure.

Dedicated GFX card is always a better option for good graphical performance. These cards has some dedicated RAM (todays cards have GDDR3 and GDDR4 with GDDR5 in the horizon) that can offload the graphics related tasks from system RAM, thus freeing the system RAM.

BTW you have a option to use the system RAM also when using a dedicated GFX card. Look for the Graphics Aperture Size in BIOS and set the size to your choice if u have a dedicated GFX card. This option enables the use of system RAM when the GPU RAM is all used in certain processes. This can help the GPU restoring it's lack of RAM temporarily.

If u want, just upgrade to a dedicated graphics card. they r fairly cheap these days with Nvidia GeForce cards starting at less than Rs.3000. Make sure u buy DX10 compatible card (Nvidia 8x00 series), these giv gud performance and will survive for sometime in the future although DX10.1 cards r set to enter the market in a few months.
