Whenever we install AVG antivirus, it works fine. But the moment we update it and restart the laptop, it becomes crappy slow and gives the warning "Virtual Memory too low". I tried increasing the virtual memory from default value to range(744-148 8 ) i.e. double the default, but it doesnt help. This happened even when we formatted the laptop and then again installed the antivirus. The laptop has 256 mb ram, 1GHz processor, Toshiba Satellite series, 20 GB HDD.

Increase ur virtual memory to 1GB and then see what happens.keep the task manager running and see how much memory the setup.exe is consuming

Set the min nd max at same value, like 1024MB so than windows will not have to increase/decrease size on need. And performance will be bit more than variable size

I had increased the virtual memory to 744(min)&1488(max).
But still it happened. This too only when I installed an update of AVG free antivirus.

1) System is fine for running XP + AVG
2) Set the system to use a "system managed swap file". In cases like yours that is the best option.
