u may NOT need to patch it tho ... mine works without patching and i dunno how
maybe it was the autopatcher updates
anywasy this is the best way and the best free way
next to thsi is style xp which isnt free but its cool !! and simpler to use with more options like changin boot n logon screens and transparency presets ...
any other software for changing VS's suck IMO

its a total resource hog .. i hate it ...besides it has icompatibilities with other software and can mess ur system
TRANSFORMATION PACKS: like flyakite, crystal, LHTP etc are nice ... but can be a hassle too ..
they can also cause trouble with ur system files as ur actually REPLACING THEM
if thers any trouble during installation ur in for a ride
the only other stardock product i use is ICONPACKAGER for changing icons
u can get cool themes from wincustomize.com
then there is bootskin and logonstudio from stardock which are freeware and do exactly what their name suggests
i use both of them !
style xp male n female differ only in the default themes that come with them !
a theme consists of ur wallpaper, screensaver, the titlebar sizes, colors, text etc etc
VISUAL STYLE are the bitmaps that are actually used , in your windows, start button, taskbar, titlebar, ur minimize/maximise and close buttons. Even ur shutdown and log off dialogue boxes sometimes !!
apart from this any SHELL REPLACEMENT software is a waste i think
and is seriously for the complete customising freak !
i dun think they are worth it
software like talisman etc fall under this
apart from these u can use docks like yzdock, mobydock and even objectdock from stardock
YZDOCK RULES btw, but its discontinued.
widget applications like samurise,konfabulator and avedesk
the first 2 suck up a lot of resources ... avedesk ROCKS !!!
