Hey I have a Sony handycam and I have created VCD's earlier using Window's Movie Maker. ow I want to create a DVD from the Hi8 cassette of the camcorder, and I think that many like this freeware option of Video DVD Maker. Well I started of and started capturing. Captured 1 min and stopped to see the size of the file. Gosh it was 123 Mb , it was avi. And yet the captured video was pixelated. I went to settings and got the following option.



In the capture part the video compressor was selected as DV Video Encoder. The other options were many video codecs like MJPEG compressor etc.. ow I dont know which one i should select so as that it doesnt take much space and the video quality is not ugly. So please if anyone has experience with this software do reply

See if mpeg4 such as DivX or Xvid is supported, if so use that and adjust settings for quality (higher bitrates)

Man, DIVX & XVID are delivery CODECs and the above program is trying to capture your video in an editing codec. (there is nothing wrong in the program)

The 123mb is temporary and you can delete that file, once you recorded your DVD. (Dont worry, its not the size of the file in your DVD)

You can install Panasonic DV Codec and capture it in DV format, then convert it to MPEG2. (Yes, you cannot capture your tape directly in MPEG2 using this software)

I know that when the DVD will be created the file size will shrink. ut almost 1Gb space per 7-8 mins, I mean I have 18 Gb partitions on my HDD. And the concern is that even after taking so much space the video output was dismal. And will that Panasonic format help. I am visiting ur website now

No, Panasonic DV Codec wont compromise with size. But you will get better quality than Microsoft DV Codec.

And regarding the size, yes you must need 1GB space for 5 mins in DV format. I wonder, why you bought a DV camera with 18GB HDD?

Upgrade your HDD or use a capture program that supports XVID. If you still need DV in small size, Use Mainconcept DV COdec.

Man, you can use XVID to capture HI8. But you will definitely loose the quality, because HI8 records in DV (I hope you dont have the ancient Analog Hi8 Camera from 1980s!!!)

You must capture the footage in DV atleast, to utilize the full bandwidth of your Digital8 tape.

If you are worrying about space, you can try Mainconcept DV Codec which is the top DV codec which uses less space.

Alright I don't mind the size but then too I have to tell that the captured footage was dismal.

That's good. I used to capture DV in AVID Uncompressed MXF. Thats' 1:1. Yes, you can even notice the quality difference b/w DV and DV captured as 1:1. (Its because of the different algorithms between your camera and the capture Codec). Even DV is a compressed format of 5:1 So dont try to compress it again...

Forget about the size, look for quality. Upgrade your HDD to 500GB atleast. (Believe it or not I have 3500GB for my AVID!!!)

^^^And how do you back up? you must have HD DVD or Blue RAY writers for the purpose...

Also i wanna ask you one thing..

I also have a Hi8 camcorder. Its Samsung SCL 770 model with USB..

i try to capture from the USB port but i get jerks and occasionally PC restarts..

The reason could be my PC but since the Camcorder was made in year 2000 i think that my PC isnt the problem..
I have Intel Celeron D 2.4 GHz, 1 GB DDR 400, 160 GB HDD... is it a bottleneck...
it would be faster than any PC available at the time my Camcorder was launched...

Which Windows version, you have?

I heard that You need to install the Samsung software "USB Media 2.0" in order to use the camera connected to the PC.

Is it PAL or NTSC Version?
