Boot the computer off the Windows XP CD, and then press R to enter the Recovery Console when it prompts you to. Once at the RC prompt, type in:
chkdsk /r
and press Enter. Once the process is done (it will take some time), type:
exit
and then restart Windows. Hopefully, your problem should be solved. However, if it isn't, then you will need to repair/reinstall Windows XP after backing up your data. Also, make sure you have the required service packs running. Microsoft has fixed an error for this in a February 2002 Critical Update.
