1.Which Netgear modem are you using?
2.Is it setup to connect automatically to the internet? or Do you connect through your OS using the PPPoE of Windows XP/Vista?
Assuming that your modem is setup to connect automatically (without even switching on the PC), check the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) properties of your Local Area Connection in both XP and Vista and ensure that both are identical.

Disable Vista's firewall and check whether you are able to connect.

Well i cant tell you anything about your modem but for you resolution problem, start msconfig.exe from run or start menu search bar.
On the Boot tab, make sure the BaseVideo option is not checked.
See if that helps you out.

Cheers!

@Krazy Great. really great. And i'm just curious. What's that Base video option? and how did you get it I mean the solution? Normally we don't even see that. Mostly we enter msconfig to look at startup programs only. Never in my life i had bothered to look into other tabs. Great indeed. congrats.Neeraj should be very happy.

You already said that your internet problem has been solved . So what's the problem now? Honestly I have no idea about bridged mode and all since I know nothing about networking but only dabbled in it to set up my home network using Netgear DG834G modem/router.. I do know how to setup the modem for dataone but if airtel has setup the modem in bridged mode and now your problem is solved be happy

I mistook that your internet connection problem has been resolved.Anyway lemme know any information that Airtel has provided you for setting up the modem for your connection such as Encapsulation, multiplexing method,VPI, VCI,DSL mode infact all the info except your user id and password and then I shall analyse and let you know whether I can be of any help.

First things first. If you do not have the user manual for your modem, download it from the Netgear site and give it a reading.
If after meddling with the modem configuration, you are unable to enter the webbased configuration page by typing 192.168.0.1, you must know what to do to get it.
Nothing great.Get into the Internet protocol (TCP/IP) properties page in Windows XP, and select Use the following IP address and type 192.168.0.2 for the IP address,255.255.255.0 for the subnetmask (if it does not appear automatically),and 192.168.0.1 as the gateway address. Now you may be worried what to put in for the primary and secondary DNS servers. You may obtain them from Airtel or put in the following Open DNS servers 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220.After this you may get into the modem page by typing 192.168.0.1. I have only prepared you for the worst case scenario but mostly it may not be required.
So now on to getting dirty with your modem. You have confirmed that both in XP and Vista you have configured the above properties as obtain IP address automatically and DNS address automatically. To that end you must turn the DHCP server to on in the modem LAN IP settings.(your current setting is off). Now go to ADSL settings page. The proper protocol setting should either be PPPoE or PPPoA.RFC2684 bridging, to my knowledge, should be selected only if you connect the modem to a router which in turn connects to the Computer. In this case the modem will neither assign an IP address to the computer nor obtain the DNS server address automatically that job being taken over by the external router. In your case there is a discrepancy here.As I said you must select either PPPoE or PPPoA.Airtel should have told you which. But never mind change it to PPPoE and try.Now I repeat the instruction from the manual. Whenever you change the settings
"If the main menu displays a Restart button, click it to re-initialize the modem, so that the new settings can take effect." So just change these two settings and then try connecting with XP and Vista.
If the above changes do not work then contact Airtel and ask them which should you use PPPoE or PPPoA.I presume it will be mostly be PPPoE.I will be surprised if they say it is RFC2684. Those using Airtel connection should be able to clarify on all these settings. I am surprised why none has come to your rescue on this matter. So only trial and error method based on some logical assumptions and presumptions. Try and let us know. Good luck.

Dude!! it tried PPPoE, its not working!! both in XP and Vista!
i think AIRTEL told that RFC coz PPPoE wasnt working!! dunno y
all the ip address, deafult gateway, subnet mask were correct from the starting itself. There is no proper manual with the modem!
I did correctly to the best of my knowledge!

the box says its a Netgear ADSL2+ Ethernet modem. but at times in the manual its referred as Router...even the airtel guys were referring it as router ..wth is going on?? im confused!! the model name is DM111P

NetGear DM111P is a very basic ADSL modem only with DHCP server..As I had said you can download the manual from the Netgear site.I had downloaded it and gone through before I posted last. The manual clearly says that it supports PPPoE and hence there is no need for installing any third party PPPoE software. So I really fail to understand why PPPoE mode does not work..After obtaining the modem's model no. I had made a google search and read a number of reviews.I have found that it has mostly negative reviews with many people having problems in configuring it.In the final analysis, you may consider dispensing with it altogether and get a better modem+router, unless someone else with much better capabilities than mine can suggest a solution to your problem.I have very limited exposure to vista and still in the learning process trying to explore and understand its working.Personally I am presently using a Netgear Wireless ADSL modem/router/access point DG834G for the last one month (BSNL broadband) and I am happy with it.

Well, thanks. The base video option is used by windows when you press F8 at boot menu and select the Boot into VGA mode option. I read about this in Digit and from other users (the MVPs to be specific ).

BTW, vista has got a hiddden boot screen that can be showed by selecting the No GUI boot option on the same page. At booting time you wont get the blank screen with a progress bar. instead you will get a nice picture (From Vista Aurora theme) and the message Starting Windows Vista...

Enjoy!

Default Re: Vista prb!!

On the modem subject, I suddenly remembered something. When Dlink released their ADSL modem 502T in India , lots who purchased the same for connecting to BSNL Dataone had problems configuring it.They were required to take it to the nearest Dlink service center who will apply a patch and make it workable. It had something to do with the MAC address of the modem. The patch to change the MAC address was also available in some forums. Later models of the Dlink modems released later came with the patch applied and did not have this problem. I presume that the Netgear modem you have now may have the same or similiar problem. You can borrow some other modem from your friend configure it and try. If it works fine with XP and Vista you can ask Airtel to replace the the Netgear modem. Even otherwise you can ask the Airtel people to change it to another make modem since you suspect there is a problem with the Netgear modem.
